Course title: English 12
Course Description:
Students will read works from the entire spectrum of British
literature from the Anglo-Saxon period up to contemporary
writings. Writing assignments will cover essay composition,
analytical writing, technical writing, and research paper
composition. Using proper documentation, citation and reliable
sources is emphasized. This course addresses the Virginia
Standards of Learning for English 12.
Course Prerequisites:
The prerequisite for this course is successful completion of eleventh
grade English.
Major Objectives or Topics:
Know and apply English structure, including vocabulary, grammar
and usage; know the variety of English communication forms; apply
effective written communications techniques; read and understand
English literary forms; perform effective research.
Materials:
Computer and internet access, and two novels from the assigned
list.
Major assignments:
 Research paper
 Persuasive speech
 Expository and technical writing
 Creative writing including, but not limited to poetry, satire and
journals
Grading Procedures:
Each lesson will be graded based upon skill mastery. Students will
be asked to revise work until it meets the minimum requirements
outlined by the grading rubric on each lesson.
Submission Policy: Students are to complete course lessons in
orders. Each day a student may post either two new lessons, or 2
revisions, or a lesson and a revision in each course. Unless
permission to work on more than two lessons has been granted by
the teacher, students should only work on two lessons at a time.
Once a lesson is graded, students may move on to the next lesson
Communication: Students may communicate with their teacher
using the Teachermail. On the Student Desk, students will find
links to Guidance, Technical Help, and Transcripts.

Students will build vocabulary in context and learn various Greek and Latin word roots
Students will identify word meanings using knowledge of Greek and Latin word roots.

Students will revise sentences using formal language.

Student will apply rules for using the correct verb forms in sentences.

Students will increase the amount of independent reading with emphasis on fiction
and nonfiction.
Students will expand vocabulary through various literary works. Students will identify literary styles according to genre. Students will examine the elements, structures and tone of various genres, as well as
provide specific literary examples of each. Students will identify historical, cultural and biographical influences of literary
works.
