Biology 101 general biology lab procedures and discussion questions

To be turned in at the end of class

Lab 3: Classification and Evolution

Exercise 1: Follow directions as indicated in your lab manual on page 26, using only the LIVING caminalcules on page 30. Categorize all 14 living caminalcules, draw lines where needed to separate them on the chart below. Use the numbers printed below each caminalcule on page 30.

Exercise 2: The comparative approach to phylogenetic analysis

Following the directions on pg 27, construct a phylogenetic tree of the LIVING caminalcules on page

30 in the space below. Use the numbers printed below each caminalcule on page 30.

Exercise 3: The phylogeny of Caminalcules

Following the directions on pg 27, construct a large phylogenetic tree of both the living and the fossil caminalcules. Copy your tree below, using the numbers listed below the caminalcules on page 30.

Discussion questions:

1. Some of the fossil caminalcules have many descendants (ex. #56). Discuss some reasons for why there is rapid speciation in this lineage.

2. Which of the living caminalcules are living fossils (like horseshoe crabs?)

3. Some of the fossil lineages went extinct. Discuss at least three reasons why extinction could have occurred (be creative, but accurate!)

4. What is convergent evolution? Are there any examples of convergent evolution in your tree?

5. What are vestigial structures? Are there any examples of vestigial structures in your tree?
