Practice Nurses
Our nurses offer a comprehensive range
of services, from travel vaccinations to
well person checks.
This booklet is to help you decide
whether you should book an
appointment with the practice nurse,
rather than seeing the doctor
Here at St Fillans we are dedicated to providing the best
possible care for all our patients. Our website,
www.stfillansmedicalcentre.co.uk, contains information about
the practice and the team as a whole, as well as a link you can
click on to register for online appointments.
New Patient Checks
When you register as a patient at St Fillans, we offer you a
new patient check with the Practice Nurse. This gives you the
opportunity to let us know of any medical problems you have
had previously, and to bring us up to date with any repeat
medication you are currently taking and your smoking status.
In the waiting room you will see our blood pressure, height,
weight and BMI recording machine (“POD”). When you
attend to see the nurse you may choose to use this machine
(tokens are available from the receptionists) and take the print
out into the nurse for noting on your records. Alternatively the
nurse will be happy to measure and record these in clinic.
Well Person Checks
Well Person Checks are available to all our patients, from the
age of 16 upwards. In these appointments the nurse will take
your height, weight, blood pressure and BMI (or you can use
the “POD”) Your smoking status will also be checked and
noted.
The nurses offer smoking cessation advice and also run a diet
and weight loss clinic.
Family Planning Clinic
The family planning clinic at St Fillans is held on Monday
evenings from 5.30pm – 6.15pm.
Outside these times, you can book an appointment to see the
practice nurse who offers a comprehensive range of
contraceptive and family planning services including:
 Depo Provera injection
 Pill Check
 Emergency Contraception
Cervical Smears
The nurses carry out the majority of the cervical smears taken
in the practice. When you attend the surgery for a smear the
nurse will carry out a Well Woman Check. Again,
appointments for the Well Woman/Smear Clinic are available
either on line or by telephoning the receptionists
Nurse-Led Clinics for Disease Monitoring
The nurses hold various specialised clinics for patients who
have longstanding problems which require regular monitoring.
These consist of: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)
 Diabetes
 Hypertension (Blood Pressure)
 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
 Asthma
You will normally be contacted by letter asking you to arrange
an appointment in these clinics, and appointments for all of
these are now available on line. Please note that for the CHD,
Diabetic and Hypertension Clinic you will need to attend for a
blood test in the first instance. A blood form will be sent to
you with the letter. Appointments in the blood clinic are
available on line, or by telephoning the surgery. Appointments
for these clinics are usually annual reviews, or in some cases
six monthly reviews. However if you are having problems at
any other time than when your reviews are due, the nurses are
available for both phone calls and surgery appointments.
Travel Clinics
The nurses provide a comprehensive travel advice and
vaccination service including Yellow Fever Immunisations
Vaccinations and Immunisations
As well as travel vaccinations you can also attend to see the
nurse for:
 Tetanus Vaccinations
 All Childhood Immunisations (in our Baby Clinic, held
on Thursday afternoons)
 Zoladex Injections
General
The Practice Nurses also carry out pessary fittings and ECGS
and also assist the doctors during minor operations, coil fitting
and contraceptive implants.
You can access an appointment with the nurse either by
telephoning our receptionists, or by registering for online
appointments either through the website, or by completing the
form in reception.
You can also book a telephone consultation with the nurse, if
you feel it is something she may be able to help you with over
the phone.
Treatment Room
The Treatment Room offers a range of services, which are not
provided by the Practice Nurses. These are:
 Ear Syringing
 Dressings
 Suture (“stitch”) removal
You can arrange an appointment for Treatment Room services
via our receptionists.
