LESSON PLAN: MATERIALS NEEDED: scrap paper for visual and written notes, white paper/paint/brushes/water/colored tissue paper for painting background sky atmosphere. Crayons for added wax resist to sky before painting. Scrap poster board, cardboard/scissors/glue for art deco building collograph. Silver &white ink/colored copy paper/brayers/newspaper. Scissors for cutting out prints. Extra strength glue sticks (sets of 24: 3 sets) for attaching prints to sidewalk. Colored tissue paper for palm tree trunks AND fronds. Blue/green paper for patio umbrellas. Blue/green paint for stamping onto white matt frames; silver tempera for star stamps on white matt frame. RESOURCES: Miami art deco websites PROCEDURES: Day 1: intro to architecture, Miami Beach, Ocean Drive hotels and environment. On folded scrap paper, students will draw a variety of art deco style hotels from Google. Day 2: continue with drawing hotels and add written notes from art deco architecture vocab sheet. Day 3: begin painting background night/twilight/dusk/sunset SKY. Add in areas at bottom for street and sidewalk. Add in textured areas? Day 4: Day 5: show final hotel rubric; get variety of thick papers. (BE CAREFUL NOT TO PICK SLICK PAPER: GLUE WON’T STICK) Create new hotel using the papers/glue and scissors. Day 8(block day): students will print their own hotel once and then other hotels on the rest of their colored paper. (finish with 4 prints-allow for 6 papers to print-student’s hotel twice) Day 9: grade 4 prints; begin tracing printed details with black thin sharpie pens. Day10: finish the tracing; start the hotel names (allow students to select 4 hotel names from Ocean Dive list)(COPY HOTEL NAMES WITH A FONT/SIZE VARIETY AND PRINT/COPY ON SAME COLORED PAPER AS PRINTS-USE AS COLLAGED HOTEL NAMES) Day 11: trace umbrellas using blue/green construction papers. Practice hotel 100 points: had to be the correct size (using the numbered tracers), had to be 1 of the 4 definitions (for art deco hotel styles using the vocab chart), had to have details like the definitions. Sidewalk/street paper 10 points: use the ruler the right way the FIRST time (along the bottom edge so everyone’s street will line up at the end) Print rubric: 10 points for just right ink; 7 points for not enough/too much ink OBSERVATIONS: Get the silver/white ink and the multi colored BRIGHT copy paper
