Dear Music Director(s),
Included in this letter you will find all of the information needed for the Malcolm Middle-Level Music Contest.
Please take the time to read this information and share it with your students.
Our philosophy is one of positive encouragement. All of our judges will be instructed to be positive, encouraging
and realistic in their expectations.
Judges Music:
All solos and small ensembles must provide one original copy of music with the
measures numbered for the judge. All large ensembles must provide three original scores
with the measures numbered for the judges. Mark all music with your school’s name on
it.
Ratings:
All solos and ensembles will receive a rating of Superior (1), Excellent (2), or Honorable
Mention (HM) with pluses and minuses. The plus and minus will be dropped when
considering the average rating for all large ensembles. Ratings will be posted around the
corner from the high school commons.
Homeroom/storage:
The elementary gym will be available for storage and individual warm-up on Friday
after 9:30 am only. There is no inside storage or warm-up available on Thursday.
Please do not block any doorway.
Final Packets:
Directors may pick up their packet with critique sheets, ribbons, plaques and any music
left behind at the conclusion of the last event scheduled for your school. If you are
bringing students on two different days, the packet will be ready at the end of the second
day. CRITIQUE SHEETS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR REVIEW
UNTIL ALL OF YOUR EVENTS ARE FINISHED.
Lost Items:
We are not responsible for lost or stolen materials, instruments, personal belongings, etc.
Items left behind will be mailed to you at your expense.
Sponsors:
Each school should have one adult sponsor for every twenty students.
Check-in/scratches:
Upon arrival, use the Jr.-Sr. High School entrance on the west side of the building and
check-in at the registration room in the library (across from the vending machines) to
report any scratches – there will be no refunds for scratches. IF YOU NEED TO
SCRATCH AN ENTRY, DO THIS UPON ARRIVAL – DO NOT CALL OR
EMAIL.
Schedule Conflicts:
Conflicts may exist in the forms you have received. With more than 800 entries it is
impossible to build a schedule free of conflicts. The judges are flexible and will take
entries out of order to accommodate accompanists and directors that are with other
students.
Parking:
You may park in the west parking lot or to the south of the elementary school.
Awards:
Ribbons will be awarded to all students in solos and small groups. One plaque will be
awarded for each large ensemble.
Time limits:
Solos and small ensemble performances are limited to five minutes for winds, percussion
and piano; ten minutes for strings. Large vocal ensembles are limited to fifteen minutes.
Bands and Jazz Bands are limited to twenty minutes. These time limits include set-up,
performance, and exit. Please refer to the warm-up room schedule for warm-up times.
Remember that this time includes getting in and out of the warm-up room; you will not
have 15-20 minutes of playing/singing time. Please follow the directions of the warmup room monitor in a courteous manner.
Provided equipment:
Chimes, xylophone, vibes, bells, 4 timpani (23”, 26”, 29”, 32”) suspended concert bass
drum (36”), acoustic piano, and an extension cord and power strip are available for
band/jazz band performances. All other percussion equipment, including sticks and
mallets, are your responsibility.
Any percussion instrument needed for a solo or small ensemble is your responsibility.
Choral risers, acoustical shell and an acoustic piano will be provided for all large choral
ensembles.
Digital pianos will be provided in all solo and small ensemble rooms except for one
acoustic piano for piano solos.
Repair service:
Terry Princ of CGS Music will be available for emergency repairs or to purchase needed
supplies (reeds, oil, sticks, etc.) and miscellaneous sheet music.
Concessions:
The Malcolm Music Boosters will provide a variety of food and concessions. T-shirts
with a new design will also be available.
Bus Driver Hospitality: There will be a hospitality room for bus drivers with a limited amount of food and
beverage. Share this information with your drivers.
Internet Availability:
Wi-Fi is not available for personal use by participating directors, accompanists,
spectators or students. Please contact me in advance if you need internet access for a
performance related issue, i.e. recorded accompaniment.
Student Behavior:
Please remind your students of appropriate behavior while in our building. This includes
following directions from any contest worker, especially room monitors. In particular,
remind them to be quiet in the hallway outside of performance rooms.
Thank you for attending the Malcolm Music Contest, I hope you and your students find this experience rewarding
and educational.
Sincerely,
Ryan Marsh
