The Workshop:
Libraries around the world are getting modernized using the latest IT applications and
digitization of local and non-copyrighted collections in Libraries and Information Centres is
becoming one of latest and priority jobs. Digitisation of books and textual documents is not
just a mechanical job. Several applications are involved in the conversion of textual and
pictorial documents into digital documents. Due care has to be taken to the storage and access
of such digital resources using international standards. Digital documents should be
accessible now and accessible later. Digital resources should get archived and accessed in
greater detail.
A number of free software are available for developing digital libraries. Dspace
(http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular software available. It has been developed
jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace incorporates digital asset management system
and helps create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. Dspace is adaptable to
various needs of Libraries and Informatiion Centres and maintains in-built interoperability
programs for application between various systems. It adheres to international standards for
metadata.
This workshop is planned to support the growing interests of LIS professionals working in
Libraries and Information Centres in Developing Digital Libraries using DSpace.
LDL: Librarians' Digital Library is the outcome of successful launching of a Digital Library
using the Dspace by DRTC ( https://drtc.isibang.ac.in ).
