APPLICATION CALL FOR PhD FELLOWSHIPS AND Master's/M. Phil. Thesis Support

University Grants Commission (UGC) under SHEP (Second Higher Education Project) invites application from eligible candidates for the

PhD fellowships (Faculty and Fresh Category) and Masters'/M. Phil. Thesis Support Grants for the year 2012. UGC, Research Funding

Program aims to enhance research capacity of faculty members and promote research based teaching learning in order to inculcate research culture.

The candidates fulfilling the following criteria may apply.

1. PhD Fellowship:

Candidate must have completed M. Phil. in the subject area where s/he has chosen for PhD study.

Candidates must have at least second division in Masters Degree, where M. Phil. Programs do not exist (e.g. Science,

Engineering, and Medicine).

 The candidate should be of below 50 years of age (52 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for Faculty PhD

Fellowship and below 40 years of age (42 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for Fresh PhD Fellowship.

 Must be a Nepali citizen.

 Must be registered for PhD in one of the Universities of Nepal and the registration date should not exceed two years by June

29, 2012.

 In case of PhD Faculty application, the candidate must submit the letter supporting the approval of study leave from the respective institution.

 The candidate must fill up the application form available in the UGC website with payment of Rs. 500 / - (Five hundred only).

 For Faculty PhD Fellowship the candidate must be a full time (permanent/contract/temporary) faculty member in a University/

Campus.

 For PhD Fellowship under Fresh Category Candidates who have completed his/her Master’ Degree within past five years and who have not been engaged as a full time faculty member are eligible to apply.

The award of the fellowship will be made on the basis of following evaluation criteria:

 Candidate’s academic records.

 Extent of candidate’s research and scholarly publications.

 Significance, academic validity and relevancy of the research issues.

 Quality of proposed research design and analysis.

 Potentiality of making contribution in addressing academic and development issues. Preference will, however, be given to research addressing prioritized national issues and development needs.

 Potentiality of generating new knowledge or exploration of new dimensions in existing knowledge or use of existing knowledge in new context.

2. M. Phil. /Masters' Thesis Research Support

 For Masters’ thesis research support the applicant must be a regular second year/ final semester student in one of the

University Campuses of Nepal.

 Candidate must submit all academic certificates & Masters' first year/semester mark-sheet.

 Candidate needs to pass the first year exam or 1st & 2nd semester exams of Masters' degree to be eligible for the grants.

 For M. Phil. thesis research support the applicant must be a regular student enrolled for M. Phil. in one of the Universities/

Campuses of Nepal and should submit the transcript of Masters’ Degree.

 Recommendation letter from the supervisor and Head of the Department for both Masters' & M. Phil. Thesis Support.

 Candidates whose result of second year/4th semester have published and if it has exceeded three months are not entertained for grants.

 Thesis proposal must be submitted along with the application form available in website with payment of Rs. 200 /- (Two hundred only).

 The candidate should be of below 50 years of age (52 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for M. Phil. Thesis

Research Support and 35 years of age (37 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for Masters' Thesis Research

Support.

 Must be a Nepali citizen.

Funding and Time Limit

The funding limit for PhD fellowship under faculty category is equivalent up to Rs. 250,000 (Two hundred fifty thousand only) and under fresh category it is equivalent up to Rs. 390,000 (Three hundred ninety thousand only). For M. Phil. /Masters' Thesis Research

Support, the grant is equivalent up to Rs. 20,000 (Twenty thousand rupees).

Application along with necessary documents must be submitted to UGC on or before June 29, 2012 (Ashad 15, 2069). Delays caused by postal service or other mode of delivery will not be considered.

Women, Dalits, Ethnic Minorities and Physically Challenged will be given preferred treatment.
