Unit #3: Writing in the Humanities:
The purpose of this unit is to introduce you to the interpretive and analytical methods that you will find in the
humanities. You will be asked to critically assess and synthesize the ideas that you gain from your research
into a comparative analytical essay. You will be asked to use Chicago style documentation.
Assignment: Please choose one of the following topics
Essay #1: Analytical Comparison of Artworks:
Present a comparative analysis of four pieces of art, two by Matisse and two by Picasso. Use at least one
piece that was not discussed in Matisse and Picasso.
Essay #2: Analytical Comparison of Personalities:
Present a comparative analysis of the personalities of Matisse and Picasso along one or more personality
dimension. Use at least four pieces of art (two by each artist) to support your ideas. Use at least one piece
that was not discussed in Matisse and Picasso.
Papers should be five to six pages in length, excluding the artwork or poems and works cited.
Portfolio: Your portfolio will include your final paper and full-color electronic copies of the works
examined emailed to me no later than 10am on Friday morning. Please observe the guidelines in the syllabus
for the paper format.
