Incubate presents work of the public in open source
arts programs
Audience can promote homemade art, dance, film and radio during
festival in Tilburg, the Netherlands
The Dutch Incubate festival gives its visitors the chance to take part in the program
itself. During Open Source Arts visitors can show their own art, make their own radio
program, show their own films and perform their own choreographies. Starting today,
anyone can hand in material for the radio station, which will then be broadcasted
during the festival between 11 and 18 September 2011.
For the first time, Incubate gives its visitors the opportunity to stand in the shoes of the
promoters and the curators. Beside the broad program with many cutting-edge artists that
Incubate offers, the public can express its own art form and add it to the festival in the Open
Source Arts program. This is part of the discussion what the visitor should or could contribute
to a cultural event. Incubate previously opened up its business plan to the public on the
Internet, and let the visitors choose what they wanted to pay for a conference on piracy.
Artistic director Vincent Koreman: "We find it important to see how we can let society come in
contact with art and culture as an organization. And in what new ways that could happen.
With the form we provide through this program we are taking it pretty far: visitors can help
determine the festival's content. "
Manager Joost Heijthuijsen adds: "And besides that we want to be open to a lot of different
people. They bring their own artistic abilities and make the festival better. We do not only do
this in digital, but also in analog ‘old-fashioned’ ways that continue to be very valuable for
these matters. "
For the Open Source Expo, anyone can submit his or her artwork. All forms of physical work
are thereby permitted. From a traditional painting to a woven basket. Then the curators will go
to work to make the exhibit coherent. They will place the work so it all fits together in terms of
content and image, or in terms of method and style. Subscribe to this through

Additionally, Open Source Radio Incubate gives the possibility to everybody to make radio.
As of today there is the opportunity to drop a self-made pre-recorded radio show that will be
broadcasted during the festival. Also during the festival in September, a studio on a central
location in Tilburg with all the necessary equipment to present a radio show. Subscribe to this

There is also the opportunity to show homemade footage during the Open Source film
program. There are only two rules: individual entries may not exceed one hour and the author
must be present during the screening. Incubate sorts on length and quality so the program
doesn’t get out of hand, and will insert some movies into the program. Subscribe to this

The dance program entitled ‘Space that must be filled’ will have an open stage where people
can showcase their own dance performances. Besides the programming of dance curator
Sonja Augart, anything is possible. There is no distinction between academic or street styles
and urban styles. Again, there are just a few rules: performances are up to ten minutes and
contain up to four dancers simultaneously on the floor. Subscribe to this through

Participating in the Open Source Arts program does not cost extra. The deadline for sending
in material is June 20th 2011, the playlists will be published in the festival guide and on the

Incubate 2011, the festival for independent culture, will take place from 11 to 18 September
throughout the inner city of Tilburg in The Netherlands. Currently there are more than forty
artists confirmed and tickets are available on the website www.incubate.org.
Incubate is the annual celebration of independent culture in Tilburg, the Netherlands. It is a festival
exhibiting a diverse view on indie culture as a whole, including a lot of music, visual arts, debate, film
