Reconstruction Road Map
Use your “Steps towards Citizenship” grid to assess the extent to which key events of the era
represented progress toward, or setbacks from, full citizenship for African Americans.
You will be creating an “illustrated road” that depicts African American’s struggle for full
citizenship rights during Reconstruction.
 Begin with “limited citizenship” and end with “Full Citizenship”
 Show progress and setbacks African Americans experienced in their struggle for full
citizenship during Reconstruction.
 Include symbols, visuals and labels pertaining to at least 2 events from each phase of
Reconstruction.
 Stop signs, potholes, roadblocks, tollbooths, construction signs, high speed limit signs
and freeway signs can all show events that either helped or hurt the efforts at
citizenship. In addition, hills, twists and turns away from full citizenship can show
setbacks, while straight paths and bridges can show progress. You may choose which
elements of a “road” represent the struggles of citizenship for African Americans.
 Stick with the “road map” analogy and do not forget to label your events with a
short explanation. Remember 2 from each phase.
 Please tape a paragraph to the back of your road map in which you write your
name and explain your road map and the significance of the events on your map.
 Be colorful, careful and free from spelling errors!
