Test Summary

Grade Level: 3 rd

grade

Topic: Geometry

Common Core Standards:

3.G.1.

Understand that shapes in different categories may share attributes, and that the shared attributes can define a larger category. Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

3.G.2.

Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole.

Time: It should take a 3 rd

grade student approximately 20 - 35 minutes. This was determined by taking the amount of time it took my partners and me to take the test and multiplying it by two.

Overview: With the help of build, draw, explain, this test will allow me to see that the student understands the attributes of different shapes and how they fit into various categories. It also helps show whether or not a student knows how to partition shapes into equal parts. This unit could go hand-in-hand with a fractions unit.

Lesson Ideas:

Lesson Plan Idea 1:

Allow students to play with pattern blocks, discovering different shapes that can be made.

Take a field trip outside or around the school to find and discuss different shapes. Point out the difference in the number of sides and angles. As a whole class, go over different categories of shapes. Assign each student a category and see if they can find items at home that would fit their particular category.

Lesson Plan Idea 2:

Use the book Fraction Action to help explain how to partition shapes into equal parts.

Use pattern blocks to help explain how one shape can be broken up into equal parts (i.e. a hexagon can be broken into 2, 3, and 6 equal parts). Students may also use geo-boards to create their own shapes using rubber bands. Students will then need to divide their shape into equal parts. Multiple worksheets may be made for practice.

This test will show me your understanding of different types of shapes and those with common qualities. This test will also show me your ability to divide shapes into equal areas and to write each part of the shape as a fraction of a whole. Read each question carefully. You may want to use pattern blocks, a geo-board, or a straight edge to help you. Take your time and write neatly. Have fun and breathe!
