AP-002-145, Change Name of Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology to Bachelor of
Science in Electromechanical System Engineering Technology
2
BACKGROUND: The College of Engineering has submitted a proposal for change of
name for a Bachelor of Science degree offered in the Engineering Technology
department. The BSET degree has gradually shifted in recent years from a generalized
engineering technology degree focusing on electronic and mechanical programs, as
reflected in its existing curriculum. In addition, this also reflects the current trend of ET
programs nationwide. Per Purdue University-West Lafayette, Electro-Mechanical
systems represent a growing area in the mechanical engineering technology program.
Electro-Mechanical and robotic systems design as applied in manufacturing, energy,
and automation systems are in high demand across the nation.

DISCUSSION:
A change name of bachelor of science in Engineering Technology to bachelor of
science in Electromechanical System Engineering Technology is proposed by the
College of Engineering. The new name reflects the recent curricula update, and will help
the program respond to the needs and expectations of students and industries.
Originally, there were three programs in Engineering Technology: electronic and
computer, construction engineering, and general/Mechanical-manufacturing. During the
2014-2015 academic year, the construction engineering moved to be merged with civil
engineering program. With the departure of construction engineering, only two
programs are left.
Through the process, the Engineering Technology department went through an
extensive update/revision of its remaining two programs in order to help manage the
department more efficiently, and to help the department to respond to the needs and
expectations of local and national industry needs. In addition, during the last
accreditation visit in 2011, a recommendation was made to reduce the high number of
technical elective courses and make some of these courses required. These recent
revisions result in today’s more modern, up-to-date Engineering Technology programs.
Out of the two existing programs, one of them is now focused on both electronic and

mechanical programs (current referral), and the other will be focused on electronics only
(name change requested in a separate referral).
According to Purdue University-West Lafayette, Electro-Mechanical systems represent
a growing area in the mechanical engineering technology program. Wentworth Institute
of Technology (the oldest engineering technology institute in the USA) and Rochester
Institute of Technology (RIT) are two top institutions in this field offer Electro-Mechanical
Systems Engineering Technology with updated curricula that ET CPP models its
curriculum from. IN addition, Electro-Mechanical and robotic systems design as applied
in manufacturing, energy, and automation systems is in high demand across the nation.
Unlike the current name, electronic systems will cover all fields in the electronic industry
and will provide a perfect updated electronic engineering technology program. Texas &
M University which has one of the finest programs in the field of electronics engineering
technology and has a recently updates curriculum has chosen the “Electronic Systems”
name to denote a holistic program in the field of electronic and computer engineering
technology with the most current courses.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Academic Programs committee recommends approval of the Change Name of
Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology to Bachelor of Science in
Electromechanical System Engineering Technology.
