FALL Sports Fall & Winter Cheerleading 7th Grade Squad Coach: Tanisha Adams 8th Grade Squad Coach: Amanda Bryant Season: Squads cheer for football and volleyball teams in the fall. (The winter squads cheer at boys’ and girls’ basketball games). Required Expenses: Cheerleaders are responsible for purchasing their own cheerleading shoes, bodysuits, panties, socks, etc. They are also responsible for paying for the school-issued uniform to be dry-cleaned at the end of the season (and during the seasons, as necessary). Cheerleaders must also have appropriate practice clothing. Call-Out Meeting: Usually April of the previous school year Try-Outs: During May of the previous school year. Students may try out for the fall squad or the winter squad, or they may wish to be considered for participation on both squads. Squad Size: Usually 10-12 cheerleaders per squad 1st Practice: Regular practices starting the first full week of school Practices: Usually at least 4 days per week except when there are events (1 or 2 events per week during competitive seasons), after-school until 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Boys’ Coach: Marty Wilkey Girls’ Coach: Vicki Wilkey Competition Distance: 3000 Meters (1.86 Miles) – girls’ race usually precedes the boys’. Required Personal Equipment: Running shoes, practice clothing appropriate for outdoor activity. Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls may participate. Try-Outs/Cuts: One for ability reasons, but students must be able to handle the distance before they can compete in a meet. Team Size: No limit – typically 25 – 40 students per team. Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Boys’ Coach: David Copher Girls’ Coach: David Copher Contests: Consists of 3 girls’ singles, 2 girls’ doubles, 3 boys’ singles, 2 boys’ doubles matches. Exhibition matches conducted as time, court space, and player personnel allow. Required Personal Equipment: Tennis racquet, tennis shoes, practice clothing. Team Uniform: Consists of athlete’s own shorts/skirt (solid white, black, or teal) and team T-shirt which the team member purchases and keeps. Try-Outs: Yes. Look for information at registration and in announcements, handouts at start of school – usually not the first day of school, but starting the Monday of the first full week of school. School-Issued Items: Game jersey, shoulder pads, helmet, practice pants. Team members are responsible for items issued to them and must return them at the end of the season or pay replacement costs. The school has some black games pants, girdles, and pads that may be assigned. However, it is recommended that each team member purchase and be responsible for his own girdle (should be one that has pads sewn in) and game pants, also with the pads sewn in. The school will have some game pants available for purchase. Call-Out Meeting: Usually held before the end of the previous school year. 1st Practice: Regular practice starts when school starts. However, team members with continued low skill or fitness levels whose well-being might be endangered if put into a game situation may see little or no playing time until fitness and/or skills improve to levels safe for them and other team members. Practices take place at Guion Creek Middle School. For practices and home matches, bus transportation to Guion is provided from each of the 3 middle schools. Team members must then be picked up at Guion after each practice or match. For practices, they may also ride the 6pm athletic late bus from Guion. Head Coach: Asst. Wrestlers in wt. classes 70-165 allowed to compete at max. of one wt. class higher than weight. Minimum wt. = 61 lbs. Wrestlers weighing less than 65 lbs. may wrestle only in 70 lb. class. Nonvarsity wrestlers participate in exhibition matches if opponent has athletes in the same wt. class. Required Personal Equipment: Wrestling shoes. Wrestlers may choose to also purchase own approved headgear. Call-Out Meeting: At beginning of 2nd trimester, during lunch periods or after-school until late bus. Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th graders may participate. At matches, athletes compete against others who may be from any of the 3 grade levels. Co-ed Participation: Both males and females are allowed to participate. Competition is NOT single-sex. 1st Practice: Upon return from fall break. Practices: Usually Monday-Friday, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Try-Outs/Cuts: Usually no cuts are made for skill reasons, but team members must have certain levels of skill and fitness in order to safely participate in competition. Team Size: No limit. Typically 20-40 members Swimming and Diving Note: The Pike Township Middle School Swimming & Diving Team consists of boys and girls from all 3 Pike middle schools. Practices and home competitions take place at Pike High School. For practices and home meets, bus transportation to Pike is provided from each of the 3 middle schools. Team members must then be picked up at Pike after each practice or meet (including away meets). When late-session practices and meets fall during New Augusta’s intersession, transportation to Pike from New Augusta may still be provided at regular times. Swim Coaches – Head Coach: Doug McCreary Asst. Coaches: Fran Miller, Jim Fallis, Sean Werner, Justin Braun Competition: Girls compete against girls; boys compete against boys. At meets, the girls’ race precedes the boys’ race for each event. Required Personal Equipment: Team members are responsible for purchasing their own practice and competition suits, caps, and goggles. Team competition suits and caps may be purchased through the coaches. Call-Out Meeting: Held at each middle school before the December holiday break, during lunch periods or afterschool until late bus. Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls may participate Try-Outs: In December before the break. Students must be able to swim at least one of the strokes. Typically, more girls than boys try out for the team. Team Size: Limited to the number that can safely and adequately practice in the single pool available for practice. 1st Practice: Early January, after the break. Practices: Typically after school until 6:30, Monday-Friday (except when pool not available due to high school meets. Bus picks up students at each school at approximately 4:30. Students are usually expected to study or complete homework as they wait for the bus in a teacher’s room. Meet Participation: Coaches try to enter all eligible team members in at least one scoring or exhibition event each meet. New Augusta North SPRING Sports Baseball Head Coach: Andy Lawrence Asst. Opponents from other schools may be teams composed of students from a single grade level. 6th Graders: May NOT participate in interscholastic baseball Required Personal Equipment: Mitt or glove, practice clothing, baseball shoes (not to be worn in the building). Game wear – socks, caps, undergarments – purchased from coaches. Water bottle recommended for practices. Team members may use their own bats, but in order for a bat to be legal it must be a BB Core bat andmust not have a weight (ounces)-to-length (inches) differential greater than 3. Call-Out Meeting: Usually during February, during lunch periods or after-school until late bus. Try-Outs: Usually 2-3 days, sometimes by grade level. Cuts: As necessary Team Size: Typically 12-15 players 1st Practice: Early March – depends upon where spring recess falls. Practices: Usually Monday-Friday, 4:00-6:00, pick-up at circle. Some mandatory practices during spring break. On bad weather days, the team often practices in a gym. Exhibition heats are often held in the sprint and hurdle events. Events: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 2400, 100/110 hurdles, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, shot put, long jump, high jump. Required Personal Equipment: Running shoes, practice clothing, water bottle. All team members must have outer clothing (sweats, tights, jackets, jogging suits, long-sleeved T-shirts, caps, gloves, etc. for all practices and meets. Team members may purchase team shirt and tracksuit. Spikes are not recommended unless you can afford spikes AND training shoes – spikes are not worn for warm-ups or for all practices. Call-Out Meeting: Early February, after-school until late bus Grade Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls may participate. At meets, athletes compete against individuals who may be from any of the 3 grade levels. Try-Outs/Cuts: After the first several weeks of practice, team members who cannot complete the warm-up laps without walking may be cut from the team. Team members may be cut for behavioral reasons at any time. Team members must be able to successfully complete warm-ups and work-outs and must demonstrate an adequate level of fitness in order to participate in meet competitions. Team Size: No particular limit. All who choose to follow the team rules and do the required training may remain on the team. 1st Practice: Mid-March Practices: Usually Monday-Friday, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Pick-up at North doors. Mandatory practices the weeks of spring break, but students with a written note may be excused if they are going out of town on vacation, etc. Meet Participation: Coaches try to enter all eligible team members in at least one scoring or exhibition event each meet. The number of team members participating in away meets may be limited due to bus space and/or entry limitations.
