Surveillance Screening for Women at Higher Risk of Breast Cancer

Invitation letter for TP53 (Li-Fraumeni) women

Dear ___________

I would like to invite you to come for a breast surveillance screening appointment.

Please call 028 xxxxxxxx to arrange an appointment with the regional surveillance screening unit.

Please note for best results, breast MRI examinations should be performed between 6 and 16 days from the beginning of your last menstrual period.

Following your appointment with a specialist in genetics or oncology, you have been referred for breast screening from an earlier age and more often than the general breast screening programme. This is because you are considered to be at a higher than normal risk of developing breast cancer. The specialist will have discussed this with you, and hopefully answered your questions. Please also see the enclosed information leaflet.

The information below shows what type of screening you will be offered, and when.*

Aged 20-39? You will be offered MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) once a year.

Aged 40-49? You will be offered MRI and mammography (breast X-rays) once a year.

Aged 50+? You will be offered mammography, with or without MRI, once a year.

* There may be some changes to the type or frequency of screening offered, depending on your individual medical circumstances .

If you have any questions about having a higher risk of breast cancer, please contact your GP . If you have questions about screening please contact the regional surveillance screening unit on xxxxxxx . You can also visit the NI Cancer Screening website at www.cancerscreening.hscni.net.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Tracey O’Neill

Director of Breast Screening
