High School Courses of Study (a broad outline)

(Districts may call these courses of study by different names)
1. College Preparatory courses for graduation (Ohio Core Graduation Requirements)
a. Preparation to attend a 4 year college (or 2 year college)
b. Student is involved in the general curriculum
i. With accommodations, if needed
ii. No modifications of content
c. Foreign language requirement (check individual college)

General education courses for graduation (Ohio Core Graduation Requirements)
a. Plans to go directly to work, or
b. Plans to attend a community college or other adult training
c. Student is involved in the general curriculum as much as possible
i. Accommodations, if needed
3. Career Technical Education (specify program)
a. Student is involved in the general course of study for the first 1-2 years of high school
(this does not exclude the student from taking college prep course work)
b. Participation in Tech Prep (earning college credit for class at career center)
c. When appropriate, the student is involved in the CTE program of choice (usually in 11th
and 12th grades)
d. Outcomes: work, training, or both after graduation
4. Ohio Academic Content Standards-Extended
Modified curriculum based on functional life skills or specially designed functional skills activities
aligned to the Ohio Academic Content Standards-Extended (districts have various names for
this)
a. Student takes some classes in more restrictive settings
b. Learns best by direct experiences
c. Jobs or voluntary work at community locations
d. Involvement in the Ohio Academic Content Standards-Extended
e. Might be involved in the alternative assessment
Questions to ask:
 Does the student need accommodations or services to support achievement & progress
in the general curriculum?
 Do accommodations & services the student currently receives provide the skills the
student will need for independence as an adult?
 Does the student know how to describe to others how his/her disability affects learning,
living, & working?
 Can the student self-advocate for appropriate adult accommodations?
 What classes will the student need to prepare for his/her job or career?
 Does the student intend to go to college?
 Is the student planning to enroll in a career technical program while in high school?
 Will the student require instruction in life skills?
 Does the student need direct experiences in order to learn?
 What classes will provide the student with skills needed to achieve postsecondary
goals?
