EXTRA CREDIT SHIELD
Due date: Friday, May 30th
1. Research one of the following gods or goddesses to help you design your
shield. The shield must reflect the god/goddess you choose.
Zeus
Hera
Dionysus
Hermes
Aphrodite
Athena
Artemis
Hephaestus
Hades
Poseidon
Demeter
Hestia
Apollo
2. Choose one of the two shields to research and make for our Ancient Greece
Unit. (you may not make 2)
Shield Option A:
1. Cut a circular piece of cardboard or Styrofoam between 18 and 24 inches (no larger).
2. Your design will have four sections: 1. give 5 important facts about your god/goddess,
2- show their family tree, 3- explain what they are the god or goddess of, 4- a Greek
design relating to the god or goddess.
3. Paint the shield before you do the four sections.
4. Put some type of handle on the back.
5. Attach your report to the back.
6. Write your first and last name and who your god or goddess is on the back of the shield.
Shield Option B:
Create a shield that represents the subject of your report. You may design your own, but it
must be between 18 and 24 inches in diameter, no larger.
1. Sketch a rough draft of your design on a sheet of paper.
2. Use a piece of Styrofoam or cardboard to create your shield. Ancient Greek shields
were round and not very large. Yours must be between 18 and 24 inches in diameter.
3. Use another piece of Styrofoam, cardboard, string, yarn, straws, pipe cleaners, etc. to
form the symbols or design to represent your god/goddess/ city-state. For example,
Athena and Athens are represented by an owl. Cut out the symbol and glue it on your
shield.
4. Use foil to cover the entire shield. Press down on the designs to give it a 3-dimensional
look.
5. Paint the foil with water-based paint and allow it to dry. Use a damp, not wet, paper
towel to rub off some of the paint so it will look old and worn.
6. Attach some type of handle to the back of your shield. Attach your report to the back.
Make sure to write your first and last name, period and your god/goddess or city-state’s
name.
