David Proud Trainee Excellence Award Competition: Application Submission DEADLINE:
FRIDAY, MAY 18th.
1. Goal:
To recognize exceptional research performed in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.
Award winners will each receive $500.
2. Categories:
Two awards are available, one for each of the following categories of trainees:
1. Graduate students
2. Post Doctoral Fellows.
3. Eligibility:
This competition is available to graduate students and post doctoral fellows. At the time of application, the
following criteria must be met:
(i)
Trainees must be current members of the Department, that is, the applicant must be
supervised by a faculty member who holds a primary appointment in the Department.
(ii)
Trainees must have worked in their current role within the Department for at least one year.
(iii)
Previous Departmental Trainee Award holders will not normally be allowed to receive a
second award.
(iv)
The applicant must be the only trainee nominated by the supervisor for a Departmental
Trainee Award in this competition.
4. Application:
Please submit one (1) electronic PDF file of the complete application including attachments with
signatures where required to cmidgley@ucalgary.ca and one (1) original hard copy of completed and
signed application to the Departmental Office HRIC 1AA20 by Friday, May 18, 2012. Applications
must consist of the following components:

A completed Application Form (see last page).
An up-to-date CV from the trainee.
A concise Statement of Significance from the trainee that outlines the significance of his/her
work while in the Department, a current research plan and how the work performed while in
the Department is expected to impact his/her future career. The statement should be no longer
than 2 pages, written in lay English and suitable for publication on the Departmental Website.
A research contribution. One appended publication (meeting abstract, article in press or
published) that highlights the excellence of the research performed by the trainee while in the
Department. In the case of manuscripts that are “in press”, a copy of the letter from the
journal editor must be appended to the front of the manuscript as proof of “in press” status.
Please also attach a brief statement highlighting the percentage contribution of the applicant
using these headings: (a) conceptualization of project, (b) experimental design, (c) data
analyses, and (d) the preparation of the manuscript. Each statement should be co-signed by
both the applicant and supervisor.
A letter of reference from the supervisor, limited to 1 page. Submission in a sealed envelope
is not required.
N.B. Incomplete applications will not be assessed by the review panel.
5. Evaluation
Application assessments will be conducted by a committee of four Faculty members drawn from the
Department of Physiology & Pharmacology and coordinated by the Education Committee.
The submitted components will be carefully evaluated to judge the quality of research conducted by
applicants during their tenure within the Department. As quality, and not quantity, will be a high priority
for assessment, the panel will be mindful not to demonstrate bias towards senior versus junior trainees.
Results will be announced by the end of June.
