Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training
The Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training team at the Center for Resuscitation Science will
provide a CPR certification program unlike any other in our area. Our team is composed of the leading
experts in the field of sudden cardiac arrest that are dedicated to training individuals in high quality CPR
and improving survival rates from a highly morbid disease. Our team includes physicians and nurses
who actually write the national and international CPR guidelines that healthcare providers and members
of the community learn every time they take a CPR training course. Our CPR certification is a highlyspecialized training which combines a short background presentation by our leaders in the field, real life
survivor stories, discussion & questions sessions with the experts and the American Heart Association
(AHA) teaching via video, and hands on practice stations. Course content will include adult, child and
infant CPR as well as hands-on demonstration of an AED. Personalized attention is very important to
our staff to ensure that each participant is learning the proper technique to provide high-quality CPR.
Learn from the Experts – Our Team
Benjamin Abella, MD MPhil, is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair of
Research with the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is
also the Clinical Research Director of the Center for Resuscitation Science. He is an expert in the
field of sudden cardiac arrest and has published scholarly work in numerous professional journals
including JAMA and Circulation and has authored review monographs and textbook chapters on
cardiac arrest and resuscitation. He serves on the American Heart Association Emergency
Cardiovascular Care task force and has participated in developing both national and international
CPR guidelines. He has lectured widely on the topics of cardiac arrest and has won numerous
honors for his research, clinical care and his teaching of residents and medical students.
Marion Leary MSN RN, is the Assistant Director of Clinical Research of the Center for
Resuscitation Science and a critical care nurse. Ms. Leary has established herself as a nursing
leader in the field of CPR quality and post-cardiac arrest, resuscitation care. She serves on the
American Heart Association (AHA) Cardiovascular Nursing subcommittee and also the AHA
Emergency Cardiac Care Basic Life Support subcommittee. She has participated in the 2010
resuscitation guidelines and will be participating in the upcoming 2015 resuscitation guidelines.
Additionally, she is the co-director of the Hypothermia and Resuscitation Training Institute at
Penn. Ms. Leary has been an author on over 20 peer-reviewed publications.
Marisa Cinousis MHA, is a clinical research coordinator for the Center for Resuscitation
Science. She is project coordinator for an in-hospital study looking to improve the quality of CPR
of nurses throughout the hospital. She is also leading the CPR training initiative to increase the
number of individuals certified in CPR. Marisa is co-author on several papers studying cardiac
arrest and post-arrest care.
