UNIT 3 GENETICS QUEST – EXTENDED THINKING PROJECT
DIRECTIONS:
1. Start with a question that you would like to answer. This should be a question that we did not
answer in class. This question is meant to extend your thinking beyond the classroom.
2. Your question must be approved by your teacher.
3. How will you answer your question? For this unit, you will research the answer to one of the
questions below.
4. Determine how you will share your finding with others. (Some ideas include: Power Point,
poster, newspaper article, blog, video, children’s book, comic strip, etc.)
5. Complete the Extended Thinking Project Proposal below.
Possible adventures for the Genetics Unit include:




DNA
o Research the history of how DNA was discovered by Watson & Crick
o Create a model of DNA
Genetics
o Watch the “NOVA: Cracking the Code of Life Video.” Write a reflection to explain
what you learned from the video.
o Research a Genetic Disorder
o Research a trait that you inherited from your parents. Create a pedigree to show the
inheritance.
Biotechnology
o Research an application of how biotechnology is being used today (Genetic Engineering,
Cloning, Gene Therapy, Bioremediation, Genetically Modified Foods, DNA
Fingerprinting)
o Watch the “Genetically Modified Foods: Eyes of Nye Video.” Write a reflection to
explain what you learned from the video.
o Complete a Hybridization Hijinks project (i.e. create a unique hybrid)
