American Mulefoot Hog
Listed as “critical” on the Livestock
Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List,
the American Mulefoot has only
around 200 stock registered each year.
Known for its non-cloven hoof, it was
originally developed from stock
brought over from Spain in the 1500s
and was widespread as recent as the
early 1900s. But, as large scale farming
developed in America, and swine
operations moved indoors, their
hardiness was their curse as they could
not thrive in intensive conditions. Not
long into the 1960s, there was only one
heard of Mulefoots in the entire world, and it wasn’t until the late 90’s before a conservation
program was developed.
The Lockhart Family Farm maintains breeding stock of around 7 purebred American Mulefoots
and works with both the Livestock Conservancy and Slow Food to help preserve and revive this
rare breed. Having received national recognition for our livestock preservation, we raise all of our
animals outside year round where get the majority of their diet from what they forage in the forest.
Your monthly gift* helps us preserve these magnificent animals by contributing to the management
of the breeding stock. It will help pay for their upkeep and improving their natural environment.
You will “adopt” one of our American Mulefoots and get quarterly updates on your animal as well
as a discount on items for sale at the farm.
