Oobleck

Lab

Materials:

One box of Corn Starch (C12H22O11)

Mixing Container

Water (H2O)

Spoon

Food Coloring

Garbage Bag

Instructions:

1. Pull the garbage bag over the mixture container. This way you can make a mess and not have to clean up a big mess afterwards.

2. Pour approximately ¼ of the box of cornstarch into the mixing container. Take a moment and mix the corn starch around with your hands and fingers. Feel the texture and make a mental note of the physical properties of the corn starch.

3. Take 1 drop of food coloring of your choice and add it to a ½ cup of water. Use your spoon to quickly mix around the food coloring in the water.

4. Add the ½ cup of water to your cornstarch in the mixing container.

5. Take at least 2-3 minutes to mix the corn starch and water mixture with your bare hands. The more you mix it properly the better this lab will work.

6. Now repeat steps 2-5 three more times as you add more corn starch and water to your mixing container. Once again please add ¼ of the box of corn starch and ½ cup per water each time you add materials to your mixing container.

7. Your cornstarch and water mixture should now have a consistency similar to honey. If you think your mixture is too runny or has too much cornstarch let your teacher know so you can get a better consistency. Generally more water is not needed during this step and further mixing your oobleck will suffice.

8. Now take 10 minutes or so to play around with your oobleck. Please try at least all of the following steps: a) Sink your entire hand into the oobleck. b) Try to roll a ball of oobleck in between the palms of your hands. c) Using a cup pour oobleck from the cup back into the mixture container. Pour it quickly and pour it slowly to see the difference. d) Hold your hand flat over the top of the oobleck and slap it. e) Play around and come up with fun and interesting ways you can test the properties of your oobleck. f) Make an oobleck snake and pull it apart quickly.

9. Clean up your lab station when instructed to do so.

Lab Questions:

1. What is a physical property?

2. List 3 physical properties of the corn starch, water, and oobleck.

Corn Starch a. b. c.

Water a. b. c.

Oobleck a. b. c.

3. Was the reaction between the corn starch and water a physical or a chemical reaction? (Use at least 4 complete sentences to justify your answer)

4. How do molecules typically behave in a solid?

5. How do molecules typically behave in a liquid?

6. How did the molecules in your oobleck behave?

7. What phase of matter would you say the oobleck is in? Why?

8. The mixture of the oobleck is actually considered a “non-Newtonian fluid”. Based upon your experience in this lab what would you say a “non-Newtonian fluid” mixture is?
