Diversity Action Plan
ECU Values:
ECU’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Community Relations adheres to the established “enduring
values” outlined in ECU Tomorrow: A Vision for Leadership and Service (2007), ECU’s long-range
strategic plan and is aligned to the Strategic Action Plan, 2010-13 and its corresponding Key
Performance Indicators that advance our Mission.

ECU Mission:
To serve as a national model for public service and regional transformation by:

Preparing our students to compete and succeed in the global economy and multicultural

Key Strategic Planning Principles:
Several key planning principles were established to develop this strategic plan:






Support for student success throughout the continuum of their college learning experience;
Adherence to ECU Tomorrow: A Vision for Leadership and Service, 2007 and the ECU
Strategic Action Plan, 2010-13;
Support for effective leadership and professional development;
Purposeful decision-making, moving towards clearly defined goals and measurable
objectives;
A commitment to institutional effectiveness; and,
Allocation of resources to ensure attainment of established priorities.

Goal 1:
Create a welcoming and inclusive work and learning environment where differences are
respected and valued.
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, 100 percent of colleges, libraries and divisions will
develop 3- year diversity goals aligned with the Institutional Diversity Action Plan.
 Measure: 100% participation by all colleges/libraries/divisions as monitored
through TracDat
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of students, faculty, and staff
reporting positive perceptions with the campus climate.
 Measure: Number of faculty, staff and students reporting positive perceptions with
the campus climate
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of educational offerings that
demonstrate inclusion of multiculturalism/diversity training and awareness for faculty and
staff.
 Measure: Multicultural/Diversity Awareness implementation guidance and
incentives from EDC; Commitment from college, division library leaders
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase support for outstanding efforts to support
diversity.
 Measure: Creation of the program
 Measure: Number of people recognized and or rewarded annually
Goal 2:
Increase access and success in higher education among underrepresented students.
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of underrepresented students who
meet the admissions criteria and apply.
 Measure: Number of underrepresented students who apply to ECU
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase retention, persistence and graduation rates of
underrepresented students.
 Measure: Retention, persistence, and graduation rates of underrepresented
students
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the level of awareness among
underrepresented students of ECU’s merit based scholarships for undergraduates, Honor’s
College scholars, and graduate/professional schools.
 Measure: Attainment of benchmark established for the university

Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of female and underrepresented
students granted STEM degrees.
 Measure: Attainment of benchmark established by the university
Goal 3:
Increase the access and success of women and underrepresented faculty and staff.
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of full-time faculty (tenure and
tenure track only) by gender and race/ethnicity.
 Measure: Attainment of benchmark established by the university
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the success of women and underrepresented
faculty in leadership roles.
 Measure: Attainment of benchmark established by the university
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of women and underrepresented
staff (exempt and non-exempt) participating in leadership and professional development
programs.
 Measure: Attainment of benchmark established by the university
Goal 4:
Ongoing assessment of multicultural perspectives used to advance teaching, learning,
research and co-curricular activities.
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of Foundations courses that
demonstrate the inclusion of multicultural/global student learning outcomes.
 Measure: Assessment of 3 course criteria per academic year per course
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of co-curricular opportunities for
undergraduate students to participate in diversity and cultural competence programs.
 Measure: NSSE, Senior Survey
Outcome Objective: By Fall 2013, increase the number of student learning outcomes that
include cultural diversity learning.
 Measure: Number of student learning outcomes that include cultural diversity
Outcome Objective: Enhance efforts to support colleges to meet and exceed accreditation
standards diversity requirements (2011-2012).
 Measure: 100% Compliance

opportunities designed to educate and inform faculty and staff about equity and inclusion
issues in learning and development.
