 Pro-active versatile general and mental health nursing

WORKING EXPERIENCE
1. MSF –OCA PRISON PROJECT - ZIMBABWE (May 2012 to date)
Position
: Mental Health Nurse
DUTIES
 Conducting assessment (history taking/mental status examination and
diagnosis of psychiatric patients detained in prison.
 Coordinating care of patients with mental illness.
 Ensuring the correct administration of medication,including injections
and monitoring the results of treatment.
 Provision of health education and psychosocial support services to
psychiatric patients and their families.
 Preparing and participating in group and/or one-on-one therapy
sessions for psychiatric patients,both individually and with other health
professionals.
 Designing of mental health curriculum and materials in line with WHO
mhGAP Intervention Guidelines.
 Providing training on management of priority mental health conditions
to Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services medical staff
(nurses,social workers,pharmacy personnel and rehabilitation
technicians) in line with WHO mhGAP Intervention Guidelines.
 Research responsibilities,data collection and report writing.



Supporting the implementation and running of comprehensive
HIV/AIDS programme in the prison project and other programs by
MSF-OCA.
Assisting in any other general medical issues that psychiatric patients
may have as the need arises.
Participating in emergency interventions ,if required.
2. INGUTSHENI CENTRAL HOSPITAL (MAIN NATIONAL REFERRAL
CENTRE FOR PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS)-MoH- Zimbabwe.
Position
: Senior Registered Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse (20102012/ Junior Registered General Nurse (2007- 2008),worked
in male acute and sub-acute wards(Khumalo and Mzilikazi
2 wards).
DUTIES
 Coordinating care of patients with mental illness.
 Carrying out the admission process(history taking/mental status
examination.
 Ensuring the correct administration of medication, including injections
and monitoring the results of treatment.
 Providing health education regarding condition and treatment to
patients with mental illness as well as to their families/relatives.
 Assisting mentally ill patients to meet the activities of daily living such
as bathing,grooming and feeding.
 Formulating nursing care plans for purposes of monitoring the
patient`s progress and recovery.
 Provision of administration services.
 Provision of counseling services(individual/group counseling) to
mentally ill patients and their immediate families.
 Coaching and mentoring fellow nurses,post basic students in
psychiatric nursing as well as general nursing students on attachment
on psychiatric disorders and their management.
 Assisting in any other general medical issues that patients may have
as the need arises.
