Web of Science Update Journal and Highly Cited Data Exercises November 2015
 Kings College London and Newcastle University want to measure the performance of research on
which they have collaborated during the last 10 years. As well as identifying research with the
highest usage count, they also want to identify which papers are the most impactful.
1. First log in to Web of Science Core Collection. Search for both universities using Organization
Enhanced (OE) using two search fields. Combine both OE fields with ‘AND’ and select the Time
Span to be 2005-2015. Search in all WoS Core Collection Citation Indexes.
a. What is the total number of papers for the period 2005-2015 in which Kings College and
Newcastle University both collaborate?
b. Sort the results by Usage Count-last 180 days. What is the usage count of the paper with
the highest count for last 180 days?
c. Refine the results by ‘ESI Top Papers’. How many Highly Cited and Hot Papers are
retrieved?
 A funding organization wants to evaluate the performance of a researcher. You have been asked to
use their ORCID identifier in order to retrieve publications as indexed in Web of Science Core
Collection. The researcher is Chris Wallace from the University of Cambridge. His ORCID is 00000001-9755-1703.
2. Clear the previous search query and return the time span to All Years. Enter 0000-0001-9755-1703
in a field then run the search by selecting ‘Author Identifier’ from the search menu.
a. How many papers are retrieved in WoS Core Collection using the ORCID identifier?
b. How many papers are published in Open Access journals?
c. Has this researcher produced Hot or Highly Cited Papers?
 A researcher is preparing to submit a paper to an open access journal. In preparation for
submission they want to identify which open access journals are the top performers in a field of
research. Use the Incites JCR 2014 data to provide the information the researcher requests.
3. Search for journals in the category ‘Immunology’ and select the ‘Open Access filter’.
a. How many OA journals are in this category? Which journal has the highest Impact Factor?
b. Now apply the Quartile 1 filter. How many journals remain?
 The researcher now wants to evaluate the performance of a specific journal.
4. Now, using the ‘go to journal profile’ search box, run a search for the journal ‘Emerging Infectious
Diseases’. Open the journal profile and click on ‘Rank’ (below the table on the left).
a. Using the JCR 2014 data, what is this journal’s rank and JIF Percentile for both categories in
which is it assigned?

 Use Incites ESI to identify the following:
5. A researcher published a paper in 2008 in the journal ‘Food Chemistry’ (Agricultural Sciences). The
researcher wants to know how many citations are currently required in order for the paper to be
classified as a Highly Cited paper in its field.
6. A group of authors want to measure the performance of a paper they published in 2010 in the
journal ‘Ecosystems’ (Environment/Ecology). The paper currently has a total of 20 citations.
a. Is this paper’s impact better than the average for the field?
b. Based on the number of citations received, in which percentile range is this paper placed?
