1. Course Description:
Debate and Forensics is a 7th and 8th grade course. In this class, students will be introduced to a
variety of public speaking and performance events. Forensics is competitive drama and includes
poetry, prose, storytelling, duet acting and other events. Public Forum Debate is argumentation
using reason and logic.
2. Course Objectives:
*To increase students’ understanding of the many contexts and forms in which communication
occurs in our society.
*To increase students’ ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their own and others’
communication styles.
*To improve students’ self-esteem through successful communication experiences.
3. Grade Outline
100%-90%...A
89%-80%...B
79%-70%...C
69%-60%…D
Below 60% is failure of the class.

5. Personal Expectations:
-Complete all assignments and homework-turn in when due.
-Have and bring all materials and supplies needed for class.
-Fill out planner in each class with details provided-make sure to write down assignment due dates!
-Have a good attitude!
-Attendance is crucial! Most work is done in class so you have to be here. If you know you are going
to be absent, please let Mrs. Kelts know as soon as possible for alternate assignments.
6. Class Expectations
--Group work is required. Please participate fully in the projects assigned to you. There will be
alternate assignments for students who cannot handle group work.
-All assignments have due dates. Please be aware of them! I will accept late work and points will be
given appropriately.
7. Materials Needed:
-Pencils/Pens/Highlighters
-Extra paper
-A folder/section in your binder to keep all of your class papers together. You never know when I’ll
ask for something!
