PROGRAMME AND MODULE DEVELOPMENT

FORMAT FOR A MODULE DESCRIPTION

Each module should have a description which should follow the format below.

SECTION A

Title of programme:

Title of module and module code number: (where possible module titles should be no more than 40 characters - if it is necessary to exceed this, please supply a suitable shortened form for printing on student transcripts.)

Module tutor:

Level of module:

Credit rating:

Compulsory or optional

Pre-requisites/co-requisites:

Excluded combinations or modules:

Mode of attendance (i.e. daytime, weekend, evening, mixed, off-site, distributed/distance etc.):

Projected all years target (actual numbers):

SECTION B

Module Rationale This section should state the rationale for this module linking it to the rationale, aims and outcomes for the programme as a whole. In essence, it should explain why the module has been included in the programme.

Learning Outcomes This section should state the learning outcomes of the course and relate them to the outcomes of the programme as a whole. Learning Outcomes should begin with the phrase:

'Students who successfully complete this module will…'

Syllabus This section should contain a broad statement of the syllabus by week and content. The detail should be contained in the module handbook.

Teaching and Learning Methods This section should state the main teaching and learning methods. Any special features of the module (fieldwork, placements, etc.) should be described together with an indication of whether or not they form a compulsory element of the module. These statements must match with the listing provided in the programme specification.

• The schedule for production and review of learning materials

• The use of learning materials including illustrative calendar and cost to the student]

Assessment This section should state the method and lengths (duration and/or words) of the assessment. If more than one method is used, the weighting between elements should be stated. It should also be made clear whether all the elements must be passed or attempted, or whether an overall pass is sufficient. It should include details of the specific forms of assessment, e.g. coursework: essay 1500 words, data analysis (30 minutes). These statements must match with the listing provided in the programme specification. Where the assessment criteria vary for the module from the general assessment criteria given in the programme specification, specific assessment criteria for all modes of assessment for the module should be supplied.

SECTION C - INDICATIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY

Reading lists must clearly indicate the importance of the items listed by using the following headings:

Core (if appropriate for the course)

Essential (if appropriate for the course)

Recommended
