two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring

Description
“As tourists stroll between Yellowstone's 300 active geysers, taking selfies in
front of thousands of bubbling, boiling mud pots and hissing steam vents,
they are treading on one of the planet's greatest time bombs. The park is
a supervolcano so enormous, it has puzzled geophysicists for decades, but
now a research group, using seismic technology to scan its depths, have made
a bombshell discovery. Yellowstone's magma reserves are many magnitudes
greater than previously thought, say scientists from the University of Utah.”
It’s interesting to see the seismologist view first dispelling a common
misconception and then commenting on the danger of Yellowstone magma:
“Contrary to popular perception, the magma chamber and magma reservoir
are not full of molten rock. Instead, the rock is hot, mostly solid and sponge
like, with pockets of molten rock within it. Huang says the new study indicates
the upper magma chamber averages about 9 percent molten rock –
consistent with earlier estimates of 5 percent to 15 percent melt – and the
lower magma reservoir is about 2 percent melt.”
“The researchers emphasize that Yellowstone’s plumbing system is no larger –
nor closer to erupting – than before, only that they now have used advanced
techniques to make a complete image of the system that carries hot and
partly molten rock upward from the top of the Yellowstone hotspot plume –
about 40 miles beneath the surface – to the magma reservoir and the magma
chamber above it.”

Web GIS for Streamflow and Stream Basin Characteristics
http://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/ssonline.html

A good example of GIS being adapted for the web. Even watershed
boundaries can be delineated. Too bad more states aren’t fully implemented.
“The primary products delivered by StreamStats are streamflow statistics and
basin characteristics. Examples of streamflow statistics include the 100-year
flood, the mean annual flow, and the 7-day, 10-year low flow. Examples of
basin characteristics include the drainage area, stream slope, mean annual
precipitation and percentage of forested area. Basin characteristics are the
physical factors that control delivery of water to a point on a stream. This
information is used to protect people and property from floods and droughts,
and to manage land, water, and biological resources. StreamStats also
provides descriptive information for data-collection stations, such as station
name, identification number, latitude, longitude, and station type.”

you break the kids up into groups of 3-5, and hand them a packet of safety
scenarios (they have to keep them face down until you say). When you say
go, they flip the scenario over, read over it carefully, and then look at their
contract to see which rule(s) weren't being followed. Once a team finds a
rule, they raise their hands in the air. First team to respond with a right
answer earns points. The team with the most points at the end of the game
earns a prize. It's a lot of fun and a great review of the safety rules for the
kids.”

Does Money Buy Happiness? High income improves evaluation of life but not
emotional well-being

Description
Mark Francek
“Recent research has begun to distinguish two aspects of subjective wellbeing. Emotional well-being refers to the emotional quality of an individual's
everyday experience—the frequency and intensity of experiences of joy,
stress, sadness, anger, and affection that make one's life pleasant or
unpleasant. Life evaluation refers to the thoughts that people have about
their life when they think about it. We raise the question of whether money
buys happiness, separately for these two aspects of well-being. We report an
analysis of more than 450,000 responses to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being
Index, a daily survey of 1,000 US residents conducted by the Gallup
Organization. We find that emotional well-being (measured by questions
about emotional experiences yesterday) and life evaluation (measured by
Cantril's Self-Anchoring Scale) have different correlates. Income and
education are more closely related to life evaluation, but health, care giving,
loneliness, and smoking are relatively stronger predictors of daily emotions.
When plotted against log income, life evaluation rises steadily. Emotional
well-being also rises with log income, but there is no further progress beyond
21
an annual income of ~$75,000. Low income exacerbates the emotional pain
associated with such misfortunes as divorce, ill health, and being alone. We
conclude that high income buys life satisfaction but not happiness, and that
low income is associated both with low life evaluation and low emotional
well-being.

Larry Claypool
“Never Squat With Your Spurs On - Will Rogers
Will Rogers, who died in a 1935 plane crash in Alaska with bush pilot Wiley
Post, was one of the greatest political country/cowboy sages the USA has ever
known. Some of his sayings:
1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.
2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
3. There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither works.
4. Never miss a good chance to shut up.
5. Always drink upstream from the herd.
6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and
put it back into your pocket.
8. There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who
28
learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and
find out for themselves.
9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad
judgment.
10. If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to
make sure it's still there.
11. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back.
12. After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he
started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him.
The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.”

“First ~Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age
and start bragging about it.
Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people
to know 'why' I look this way.
I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think
of Algebra.
Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it's such
a nice change from being young.
Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable and relaxed.
Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was
called witchcraft. Today it's called golf.
And, finally. ...... If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have
29
anything to laugh at when you're old.”
