Procedures

In accordance with the prescribed policies and procedures listed under regulation 168 and the requirements outlined under regulation 97, the approved provider of an education and care service must ensure that:

procedures are developed for all potential emergencies relevant to the service

emergency procedures clearly outline instructions for what must be done in the event of an emergency

the service must have an emergency and evacuation floor plan

emergency and evacuation procedures must be rehearsed every 3 months that the service is operating rehearsals are documented; and

a copy of the emergency and evacuation plan and instructions are displayed in a prominent location near each exit at the service premises, including family day care residences.

In accordance with the NT Fire and Emergency Act, all services must have emergency and evacuation procedures in place in the event of a fire. procedures are important for reducing anxiety and the risk of harm to children enrolled at the service.

Rehearsals may include multiple emergency procedures and may involve one or more of the following, but are not limited to:

Other potential emergencies may include: bomb threat, natural disasters (eg. cyclone, flood, earth quake, intruders or outside threats).

For every emergency identified, procedures must be developed so staff, families and children have clear guidelines what will occur in the event of that emergency and each person understands their role and responsibility.

Fire – practice of evacuation drills

Cyclone – discuss with staff and/or children about the threat, possible impact on the service, preparations required and roles and responsibilities

Bomb threat – discuss emergency procedures with staff to ensure they clearly understand their roles and responsibilities

Intruder or outside threat - practice of lock-down procedures.

Every emergency procedure in place at the service must be rehearsed every three months.
