Dear Insert name from database
Orthopaedic data review and peer to peer advice pilot based on the principles of
‘Getting it right first time’ report, endorsed and funded by the Secretary of State
and NHS England.
Last year, Tim published a report entitled ‘Getting it right first time’ (GIRFT) that
considers the current state of England’s orthopaedic surgery provision and suggests
changes to improve pathways of care, patient experience, and outcomes with significant
cost savings. Further information can be found at timbriggs-gettingitrightfirsttime.com.
This project will explore the reality behind the principles of the report and a programme of
data analysis and peer-to-peer management consultancy is now being rolled out.
We will be analysing data from twelve data sources - including the National Joint
Registry, PROMS, HES, NHS Litigation Authority - for every relevant provider and
seeking to visit them in order to validate and explore the data.
The project will be led by frontline clinical professionals from the BOA, and a number of
other relevant organisations, and is endorsed by the Department of Health and NHS
England.
The commitment from your Trust would be:

Review draft provider report and orthopaedic dashboard 4 weeks prior to the visit,
and provide feedback

Permit Prof Briggs and his team to visit the trust for half a day in order to:


Meet with the Chief Executive, Medical Director and/or Clinical Director of
Orthopaedics and General/Operational Manager of Orthopaedics (or nominated
alternative members of staff) as a group for a maximum of 45 minutes, to
discuss the data and local issues and arrangements

Present a summary of the provider report to all available orthopaedic clinicians
for 45 minutes.
Validate the final provider report that will feed into the national report
These visits are planned between September and May 2014.

Whilst involvement is discretionary, we believe that trusts will recognise the value of the
project. All participants will receive an extensive, free of charge, nationally endorsed and
clinically supported review of their key orthopaedic metrics and national context.
In the next few weeks we will be contacting you in order to discuss a visit.
We look forward to working with you in this exciting project and hope that this initiative
will prove valuable to patients, providers and the profession.
Yours sincerely
Professor Tim Briggs
