BIOL-161 Biology I
Semester: Fall 2012
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The major concepts discussed in this course include cell structure,
metabolism, energy relationships, genetics and the dynamics of plant functions. High School
Biology or BIOL-114 is required. High School Chemistry is recommended.
GOALS OF COURSE: It is hoped that the student in this course will develop an understanding of
the basic tenets of biology, which apply to all living organisms: the origin of living things, cells,
energetics, reproduction and heredity, and molecular genetics. Secondly, the biology of particular
organisms will be stressed with an emphasis on plants.

Course Standards: All assignments are due on the date indicated. Late assignments cannot
obtain full credit (40% reduction) and missing assignments obtain none. To receive credit,
assignments require your name to be included prior to submission.
EVALUATIONS: CALLED EXAMS will be announced one week in advance. Exams are in the
format of best answer and fill-in type questions. If you miss an exam a final comprehensive "make
up" exam will be given at the end of the semester. You can only make up one (1) exam, quizzes
cannot be made up.
