ORIENTATION LEADER POSITION DESCRIPTION
Orientation Leaders serve as a primary resource for new students and their families and are therefore expected to
exhibit a high degree of maturity, responsibility, integrity, care, friendliness, and a positive attitude. Orientation
Leaders should exhibit a strong commitment to the mission of Drake University.
RESPONSIBILITIES______________________________________________________________________
Orientation Leaders and other staff members will work to create a friendly and helpful environment in which
students and their parents can find answers to their many questions and concerns about Drake University. Specific
duties will include the following:










Attend ALL portions of the orientation staff development and program sessions, including arrival and
departure periods, briefing and debriefing. Applicants are advised that the schedule is tight and most
weekends during the month of June will be used.
Assist the Associate/Assistant Dean of their college with academic advising and course registration
Facilitate small group discussion
Assist with check-in and checkout processes
Assist the Residence Life staff in maintaining a warm and friendly community environment for orientation
guests. This will include making keen observations of building activity and addressing behavioral problems,
reporting maintenance concerns, etc.
Coordinate social activities and team building activities for orientation guests
Work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse group of staff members
Be responsible and accountable to team members, staff, and new students and their families
Serve as a positive role model and interact with team members, staff and new students authentically, truthfully,
and honestly
Other responsibilities as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS______________________________________________________________
All Orientation Leaders must be in good academic standing with the University. “Good standing” is defined as
maintaining no less than a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and being free of any type of academic or nonacademic probation.
Please Note:
The first phase of the selection process will begin with group process (each person will attend one of two
sessions) and then the Orientation Leader Selection Committee will review applicants and select the individuals to
be interviewed. All applicants must meet the requirement of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average, and
have the ability to express their ideas and thoughts in written form. Clarity, grammar, spelling, and overall
professionalism will be taken into consideration when reviewing the applications.
