Description
Xcel Energy has an opportunity for an Electrical Engineering Intern. This internship will be
located at the Maple Grove Service Center, Maple Grove, MN. The intern will assist with the
daily operations and projects. We are looking for an intern who would be interested in
working part time during the school year and full time over the summer.
Through practical field experience and mentoring, the successful candidate will gain
significant professional confidence and interpersonal skills, as well as knowledge of the
business.
As an intern, your work will directly impact the reliability of our Transmission and Distribution
systems. You will interface with several engineering departments within the company (e.g.
Transmission Line Design, Substation Design, Transmission Operations, System Protection
Engineering, and Substation Field Engineering). This will afford you the opportunity to
understand the different engineering roles and increase your overall knowledge of how our
electrical system works.
The MN-WI Substation Field Engineering department includes a staff of approximately 12
engineers with years of combined substation engineering experience and recognized experts
in areas of substation design, power equipment, and control and protective relaying.
This intern position will help, aid and assist the substation field operations (SFE) department.
By completing routine and repetitive tasks, the intern position will enhance operations
efficiency of the department while providing an opportunity for an intern to be exposed to
and gain SFE experience. Through practical experience with engineering systems and
mentoring opportunities, the successful candidate will gain significant professional
confidence, interpersonal skills and knowledge of how the electrical distribution and
transmission systems work.
Specifically, this internship will support capital and O&M projects. Business and project
management support may include:

Perform monitoring and progress documentation of small projects
·
Assist staff with various activities which may include coordination of work with senior
engineers; drawing research; prepare/ review drawings
·
Engineering support may include performance of basic engineering calculations; field
review; assist engineering in inspection, and evaluation of systems
·

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
·
Actively enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university.
·
Must be pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE or MSEE).
·
Student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (open to Freshman – Senior); Graduate
students (MSEE) will be considered; in addition, pre-engineering students will be considered.
·
Computer experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office products required.
·
Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
·
Applicants must have reliable transportation and valid driver's license.
·
Must be eligible for employment in the United States
Preferred Requirements
·
Power Emphasis with EE degree strongly preferred
·
It is preferred but not required, that interns be available to work 10-20 hours per week
during the school year and 30-40 hours per week during the summer
·
An interest in the power industry is desirable.
