CHAIRMANS ANNUAL REPORT
U3A CHESHUNT GROUP - ANNUAL REPORT
NOVEMBER 2014 - OCTOBER 2015
Cheshunt U3A Group has now been active for 5 Years and is now entering its 6th
Year.
Membership has continued to grow, albeit at a slower pace, and peaked at 680
members during the last year which is 30 higher than at any time during the
previous year.
We continue to attract new Members from within the Borough and beyond who are
retired or semi - retired. This is achieved not only by word of mouth but also through
our increased profile within the wider community and by supporting events such as
The Older Persons Forum and The Broxbourne Community Fair as well as having
regular features in the Hertfordshire Mercury.
Our growth, as welcome as it is, nevertheless provides a challenge as we have
averaged an attendance of 270 at our monthly meetings and have on occasions got
close to the maximum of 338 that is allowed in Wolsey Hall which is the only facility
in Central Cheshunt that can cater for our needs and has allowed us the growth
that we have attained. During our financial year we hired the Hall, including the
Prescott Lounge and Garden Room, on 118 occasions so its importance to our
continued growth cannot be understated.
As always we have had a variety of Guest speakers who have informed and
entertained us during the year and these have included  Ian McHannah, who improved our knowledge of Royal Parks and Palaces.
 Nick R. Thomas, who returned for the 2nd time to amuse us with stories and
anecdotes about Patrick ' Call my Bluff' Campbell.
 Andy Thomas, who left more questions than answers as he delved into Crop
Circle Mysteries.
 Colonel Piers Storrie - Pugh of the Not Forgotten Association who was
making his 2nd visit to talk about his Fathers life as a Prisoner of War in
Colditz Castle.
 Maggie Radcliffe talked about a ' Lady and Her Spitfire'
 Anne Bird showed us the World of Roses and other Illustrations.
 The ever popular Mick Casson made his 5th visit to us and informed us, in
his own inimitable style, about the Tower and its local connections and was
presented with a long service medal to mark the occasion!
 The two Johns entertained us with an amusing look at life through their
videos and they return today to provide some light relief after the AGM !
We have also supported Local Voluntary organisations by allowing them access to
our Monthly Meetings. These have included Herts Air Ambulance who gave an in depth presentation about the service they provide, Herts Healthy Homes, Cruise,
School Readers and Herts Groundwork Services. Not only do they provide free
advice and support for our Members but they also regard U3A as an excellent
source of volunteers for their organisations.
 Our Groups continue to flourish and over the last 12 months we have
supported 47 groups providing different interests and activities for our
Members, some of which are combined with other local U3As , and new
groups formed during the year have included MOTO ( Members on their
Own) and Music Appreciation.
 Our Tap Dancers performed in front of a large Audience at the Spotlight as
part of BARTS event and Singing for Pleasure have sung at Residential
Homes.
 The Cycling Group undertook a 3 day tour of Essex as well as riding the
Olympic Velodrome and BMX course.
 The Watercolour Group displayed some of their work in an exhibition at St.
Mary's Church.
 The Exploring London and Away Day groups have arranged many interesting
trips that have informed and educated those who participated.
 The Combined Sailing Group enjoyed a week of activities on the Greek
Island of Lemnos and our Keep Fit, Dancing and Walking Groups also
provided physical exercise for those who wanted to participate.
These are just highlights of what has gone on through the year and our now
enlarged Programme and comprehensive Website give a monthly in -depth update
of all activities and items of interest. Our Website is now regularly receiving over
5000 hits per month which is testament to the work that goes into it.
None of this would be possible without the time and commitment of our Group
Leaders who organise all our activities and interests. Some of them not only run
more than one group but also serve on the Committee so our thanks to them for
making Cheshunt U3A what it is.
Two of our Committee attended the National U3A AGM at Nottingham in August
and our commitment to the wider U3A is underlined by our support for the Herts
Network and the more local 6U3A groups whose meetings we attend. Such
meetings are valuable in sharing ideas and initiatives and tapping in to the
experiences of other areas who have been in existence longer than we have.
We are also in the early stages of planning a Shared Learning Project with Ware
and Hertford U3As.
We have enhanced our presence within the Local Community, not only by
supporting Fairs, Forums and BARTs events as stated earlier, but by also attending
Hall Hirers meetings, Mayors Church Service and other receptions. We are also
invited to the initial planning meeting for the Broxbourne year of Culture 2016 so
there will be more opportunities for some of our groups to showcase their talents
next year!
Part of the U3A ethos is ' For the Members by the Members 'and that always
applies but now we can add 'by the Members for the Community' as also being our
maxim for next year.
In closing I would like to thank our Committee for their time, input and support
during the past year. We are fortunate that they have all decided to stand again for
2016 although we would of course like to see new blood and we have one vacancy
and also the power to co -opt 2 members onto the committee who can offer new
ideas. In the long term we need to bear in mind that some terms of office will end in
one years’ time so we will require nominations then.
We can look forward to 2016 with Cheshunt U3A in good health and thanks to all our
Members and Group Leaders for making it the success that it is.

EXPLORING LONDON 1 Eileen FUNNELL 01992 422475 November
saw us visiting the Royal Albert Hall for ‘The Classical Spectacular’. A
wonderful evening, with popular classical music, everyone waving their
Union flags and singing ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, with the finale 1812
Overture, with fireworks, canons and muskets. There were also ballet and
can-can dancers, one of whom danced right next to one of our party – his
face was a picture! We have just had our Christmas meal at the Arcelor
Mittal Orbit at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It was the first time there
for several people and some people took advantage of the shops in Westfield
on the way to the Park. Firstly we had a trip up the Orbit – wonderful views
of London and the Park. We all travelled by lift to the top but some walked
down. Our meal was in The Podium at the base. A very nice 3-course meal,
with generous portions. My thanks to all the members of the Group for the
support during the year, and very best wishes to you all for a very Happy
Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2016.

In November members from Explore London 2 & 3 Groups visited the
Hindu Temple in Neasden. After an early start and torturous coach journey
through rush hour traffic we arrived to a warm welcome from members of
the temple. After a short video about the building of the temple and an
explanation of the meaning of their gods, we were taken to the shrine to
view the sacred images dressed in their finery. The temple is built from
Italian marble that was carved in India before being assembled by
volunteers on site. Some of the group attended the Arti service whilst
others visited the exhibition of Hinduism. Following this we all enjoyed a
pleasant lunch and an easier journey home.

Thursday 18th February - Tour of the Guildhall - Fully Booked
We have had a good year, our last trip was to Neasden to see the Hindu
Temple, which as we approached looked very majestic. We had a talk
about how and when it was built and how long it took them to finish. I
hadn’t realised that it is only 20 years old. The workmanship and carvings
inside are very intricate. It is very interesting to see how other cultures and
religions bear a similarity to our own, but in a different format. We came
away feeling very impressed.I would like to wish everyone a Happy
Christmas and Happy & Healthy 2016.

MORNING WALKS
Rob SCOTT
01992 445288
We had 23 walkers out for the December walk , which proved to be a very
mild day - if a little wet on some of the footpaths; the ankle deep water
didn't discourage us though. We were joined at the Bull by Steve G, where
we had the initial Christmas dinner of the season - a very good
introduction to excess eating. Thanks to Marilyn for organising it.
Our first walk for 2016 will be on Tuesday 5th January, starting at
10.00am from Abbotts Way, Stanstead Abbotts, SG12 8HU or Grid Ref
387119. It is a circular 6 mile walk and should be less muddy underfoot.
We will follow field paths, the Harcamlow Way, and the Hertfordshire
Way before meeting the disused railway line that went to Buntingford. We
will cross the River Lea and navigation, and then arrive back at Stanstead
Abbotts via the towpath. A varied walk of fields, woods, railway trackbed
and river and of course good company. What more could you ask for?
Stanstead Abbotts was actually made up of two villages, Stanstead Abbotts
and Stanstead St Margarets and was originally recorded as Stanstede at the
time of the Domesday Survey in the late 11th century. The manor passed
to the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross in the 12th century until it's
dissolution in 1531. The neighbouring parish of Stanstead St Margarets
was originally called Thele and later it became Margarets Thele after
Margaret Lovetot, the lord of the manor. The heavily forested area
supported the charcoal industry and the fertile soil produced the high
quality barley, that was turned into the finest malt. There are a significant
number of historical buildings in the High Street, with just one malting
still remaining.
I hope everyone reads this, as I will be asking questions on the walk!
My number for any problems is 07594427190.

Laptop, tablet, iPad, kindle, hudl, iPhone.
If you are having difficulty getting full use from any of these devices then why not try
the eBuddy Project we are organizing in conjunction with Herts Regional College.
Students from the College are giving up their lunch hours to help people such as
ourselves get to grips with problems we may have with portable technology.
Groups of 10 – 15 members can attend two sessions at the College where they will be
paired with a student who will try to help them with their device. Each session will
last 90 minutes, but it is important that members attend both sessions.
As well as helping us get to grips with IT problems it is hoped that the students will
gain confidence in delivering work related learning. Both Ware and Lea Valley U3As
have taken part and have been very pleased with the result.
Although the College are not imposing a charge, we would ask members taking part,
to donate £2 per session (£4 in total) to be given to the IT dept., for the students to
decide on its use.
You will need a device of your own to bring to the sessions.
Sessions will be arranged to start early 2016 so if you find that Father Christmas has
brought you one of the above toys you know where to come to get help.
Email stevegcheshuntu3a@gmail.com or put your name and contact details on the
list on the notice board at our main meeting for more information.
