Letter from the Provost
As we finish out the fiscal year with the month of August, I would like to take a moment to thank our
faculty members for their efforts in UTMB’s revitalization and growth this past year and for the critical
role they play each day in bringing the benefits of our innovative teaching, patient care and research
to surrounding communities and to society at large.
During fiscal year 2013, we accomplished important tasks in support of our core missions. We
celebrated the addition of our New Student Testing Center to our campus. This facility provides
students and faculty members with expanded space for testing and learning, allows fewer scheduling
conflicts, and provides greater efficiency in the administration of exams.
We also filled several key leadership positions within the Academic Enterprise and implemented
UTMB Connect to streamline patient flow and improve access. In the research arena, our Research
Futures Committee finalized their report to help guide our research strategies and associated
investments. We revised our Faculty Compensation and Incentive Plan, which is currently under full
review by the University of Texas System Office of General Counsel, to be implemented the midpoint
of the next fiscal year, March 1, 2014. Among many important changes, the revised plan provides
greater consistency regarding how we recognize and reward faculty contributions in patient care,
education, research and administration.
We have much to be proud of this past year, and are poised to take UTMB to even greater heights in
the years ahead. I look forward to continuing our work together to address challenges and to
transform our many opportunities into tangible achievements.
Sincerely yours,
Danny O. Jacobs, MD, MPH, FACS

Patient Care
Improving MyChart through Surveys
To improve provider-patient interaction, UTMB recently conducted
two surveys to assess our patients’ perceptions of MyChart as well
as our clinical care teams’ experience regarding use of this online
tool.
More than 32,000 of our patients are using MyChart to access
their lab and imaging results, to request medication refills, and to
communicate with their care teams. In our patient survey, we
705
Report from the Executive Vice President, Provost and
Dean of the School of Medicine | 11
learned that they feel more in control of their health utilizing MyChart, prefer physicians who use
MyChart, and would recommend MyChart to a friend.
Our physician/provider survey concluded on July 31st, with an overall response rate of 33.8%. We
anticipate that results will be available the first week of September, following feedback analyses by
the MyChart Executive Committee.
