Academic responsibilities
Job Purpose: To undertake clinical work in the specialty of paediatric surgery to enable academic
activity, to conduct high quality research in line with the research strategy of the Faculty of Medicine
and the Academic Unit of Human Development and Health, to contribute to teaching at
undergraduate and postgraduate level, as required; to participate in Faculty administration
Primary Responsibilities/Activities:

Develop the research activities of the Human Development and Health Academic Unit by
sustaining a personal research plan and developing innovative research proposals and
funding bids; managing and undertaking research activities; publishing in international peer
reviewed journals; reviewing manuscripts and grant applications when appropriate.
Interact and collaborate with other Faculty and University research teams, contributing to
funding bids, writing peer-reviewed papers, and managing and providing guidance to staff
and students based on specialist expertise, as appropriate.
Provide advice and, where required, leadership for non-clinical colleagues undertaking
research and provide the links with other members of the Faculty of Medicine
Contribute to efficient management and administration of Academic Unit and Faculty, as
required by Head of Academic Unit and Dean.
Participate in continuing medical education, as well as continuing professional development.

Clinical responsibilities
Note - clinical academic staff are managerially accountable for their clinical duties to the Clinical Lead,
for the SUHT Department of Infection who has overall responsibility for the services within the Care
Group.
The job plan will be discussed and implemented on appointment following discussions with the Clinical
Lead.
Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
Provide a clinical service, consisting approximately 3.75 PA’s of direct clinical care and 1.25
PA’s of supporting professional activities:
2.25 PA Surgery
1.5 PA
Clinic/Ward work
1.25 PA SPA

Share supervision of junior medical staff with consultant colleagues.
Participate in audit, clinical effectiveness and clinical governance initiatives as required by
the Trust and commissioners.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
A Primary medical qualification and full registration with the
GMC
Inclusion on GMC Specialist Register, or CCT awarded or
expected within 6 months
Clinical training and experience in Paediatric Surgery
equivalent to that required for a UK CCST
Possesses MRCP or equivalent recognised qualification
