Parents of Locust Grove Fourth Grade Students:
Greetings from the music department here at Locust Grove Elementary! This is to let you know of an
opportunity the fourth grade students have coming up in the months ahead.
This year your child will be learning to play the recorder. The recorder is a beginning
woodwind instrument that is a key part of the Orange County music curriculum. Playing this
instrument develops many skills including listening, breath control, and reading music notation.
We plan to begin studying recorders starting the first week of February and continuing through
much of the school year, as well as again in the fifth grade year. The recorder curriculum, playing
tests and class preparedness will determine a large part of your child’s music grade.
Every child will need to provide his/her own recorder to eliminate “germ” worries. If your
child does not have access to a recorder (possibly from an older sibling or prior study), you can buy
one through the music department. Each recorder costs $6.00, and is a high quality instrument with
a case and neckstrap included. Students will be responsible for having their recorder for every music
class. If this is a concern you may want to purchase an additional recorder for your child to keep one
at home and one in their locker at school. Students will also need to have with them for class a pocket
folder. They may use a folder from another subject as long as they keep all of their music sheets
together and bring them with them to class.
If you wish to buy a recorder, please have your child bring in payment and the form on this
sheet no later than Friday January 30th , 2015. If you write a check, please make it to
Locust Grove Elementary School. If you send cash, please send exact change. I do not
have the ability to make change.
We are all very excited about the things happening musically here at Locust Grove! I look forward to
