Interferential Current Therapy (IFC)
Interferential (IF) current is essentially a deeper form of TENS, delivering 50 times more
energy into the tissues than a TENS unit. IF electrical stimulation effectively delivers current
deep into the tissues as well as at the surface of the skin. Thus, with IF stimulation, current
perfuses to greater depths and over a larger volume of tissue than other forms of electrical
therapy. IF current crosses the skin with greater ease often resulting in greater patient comfort
during stimulation.
Interferential current therapy involves the placement of two electrodes on the skin at a painful area or
the spinal nerve root associated with a painful region. Alternating currents of medium frequency are
applied through the electrodes to the area. The currents rise and fall at different frequencies. It is
theorized that the low frequency of the interferential current causes inhibition or habituation of the
nervous system, which results in muscle relaxation, suppression of pain and acceleration of healing.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies the interferential current stimulator as
a powered muscle stimulator. It is similar to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
(TENS). However, because there is minimal skin resistance with the interferential current
therapy, a maximum amount of energy goes deeper into the tissue. It also crisscrosses, as
opposed to the linear application of the TENS. This crisscrossing is noted to be more effective
because it serves to confuse the nerve endings. This prevents the treated area from adjusting to
the current
