BACKGROUND AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The engagement of CSOs with UNODC has developed considerably over the years and is emphasized in the
UNODC Strategy for period 2012-2015. To achieve this goal, UNODC has established crucial partnerships with
NGO umbrella organizations working on issues related to the UNODC mandate in order to bridge the gap that often
exists between international policy-makers, national authorities and civil society. To this aim, UNODC has equipped
itself since 1997 with an electronic NGO database listing over 3,000 NGOs involved in prevention, treatment and
rehabilitation of drug addicts, alternative development, crime prevention (including anti-human trafficking and anticorruption activities) and criminal justice reforms. This database has become a valuable tool throughout the years,
not only for the UNODC Civil Society Team, Substantive Units and Field Offices, where NGOs actively participate
in operational projects, but more importantly, it has developed into a networking tool for the public at large. The
Civil Society Team also maintains regular communication with relevant NGOs through its website page and through
an NGO Unit mailbox, through which it disseminates valuable information on UNODC activities such participation
in intergovernmental meetings, grants and awareness campaigns, etc.
Responsibilities:
• Improve existing and develop new means to reach out to NGOs working on UNODC mandates through its
website, social media and the NGO Unit mailbox for the purpose of inviting them to specific intergovernmental
meeting, trainings, applications for grants and providing them with information related to UNODC campaigns and
events;
• Facilitate the implementation of an online platform for NGOs working on drug related issues;
• Conduct a general update of the NGO Database;
• Keep track of UNODC involvement with NGOs (grants, partnership, contracting, participation at conferences, etc.)
and facilitate its interaction with them;
