SACN (2007) ‘ There is no published evidence that the use of any follow on formula
offers any nutritional advantage over the use of whey based formula amongst infant
artificially fed’
Claims of them being a good source of iron has been vigorously marketed but the
little extra added doesn’t make huge difference to amount absorbed.
Only a small amount of extra Vit D added.
Growing up milks contain almost twice as much sugar as cow’s milk.
More expensive than Cow’s milk but fastest growing sector of infant milk marketheavily advertised.
Guess if you can’t increase number of children formula feeding good idea to increase
the length of time they are on the product.

Use Glucose syrup as carbohydrate source. Have been used to treat CMPA but these
children can be allergic to soy protein.
The higher levels of phyto-oestrogens in soya milk can pose a risk to future
reproductive health.
Not recommended for infants under 6 months of age
However lactose free and suitable for vegetarians
Glucose used instead of lactose.
Lactose intolerance can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, flatulence and /or bloating.
These milks are suitable if lactose intolerance has been proven. ESPGHAN consider the
use of lactose free formula to treat acute diarrhoea unjustified.
Thickening agent in SMA staydown is corn starch, Enfamil AR is rice starch, Aptamil
and cow and gate it is carob bean gum. The issue with all of these products is the
temperature of the water is lower than 70c in reconstitution because of how it can
affect the thickeners. These formulas are casein based. Research is inconclusive as to
the benefits of these milks to deal with symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Proteins are partially broken down(whey based). Also reduced lactose and fat blend
Suggested that they help with minor digestive problems in babies such as colic and
constipation.
