UK input into Horizon 2020
SOCIETAL CHALLENGE 1: Health, demographic change and wellbeing
The MRC leads the UK delegation on the Horizon 2020 Health, Demographic Change and
Wellbeing Programme Committee. The Programme Committee consists of a delegation
from each European Member State and one of the Committee’s roles is to input into and
approve the final content of the calls published under the Health Challenge.
The MRC welcomes suggestions for call topics from UK organisations and researchers
with an interest in the Horizon 2020, Societal Challenge: Health, demographic change
and wellbeing.
Submission content
All submissions should be prepared using the form below. Submissions should include
the text of a call that you would like to see in future Work Programmes; submissions
should not describe individual research projects.
Please clearly state what the expected outcomes of the projects funded under your
proposed call would be. Please also provide a justification, focusing on both the
importance of the research topic and why the topic should be funded at a European level
rather than through national bodies.
If you are aware of researchers in other countries who would be interested in responding
with you to your proposed call text, please let us know. This would help us to understand
whether we could expect support for the call topic from other Member states at the
Programme Committee.
What will happen to submissions?
The submissions will be analysed internally within the MRC in order to understand the
key topics for which there is strong support from the UK community. Submissions will
not be peer reviewed, but where appropriate, the MRC will seek external scientific
advice. The MRC may also seek advice from the other members of the UK delegation on
the Programme Committee (e.g. Department of Health, the Department for Business
Innovation & Skills and the Technology Strategy Board).
It will not be possible to put all submissions forward. Decisions on which topics to follow
up will be based on: whether the call suggestion fits reasonably within the aims and
objectives of the Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge pillar and whether the next calls are an
appropriate time to lobby for a particular topic.
The submissions will be used in a number of ways during the development of the calls.
They will be used in discussions with Commission Project Officers on the content of
future calls; in the preparation of written submissions to the Commission and also during
discussion at Programme Committee meeting. If the submissions are not appropriate for
the next call, they may be kept on file for future calls.
We regret that as we are expecting a high volume of submissions, we may not be able to
provide a tailored response to each submission.
