Science Technician with Information Technology Support
Temporary: Term Time until 30.6.2017
35 hours per week
Hourly Rate: £9.41 - £9.78
Essential criteria
At least five GCSE’s at Grade C or above (or equivalent CSE (Grade 1) qualifications)
including English and Mathematics.
Good communication skills.
Team worker
Desirable
At least a Level 3 qualification in Science e.g. BTEC National Diploma in Science or ‘A’
Level chemistry or equivalent or
Recognised IT qualification e.g. level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC National Diploma in
Information Technology or ‘A’ Level Information Technology
Experience of setting up experiments, maintaining equipment, record keeping/stocking.
Experience in maintaining IT facilities and resources.
Ability to assist the Information Technology Technician in the efficient operation of the
computer network.
Experience in a relevant laboratory/ IT setting or industrial experience.
The criteria may be enhanced.
It is expected that applicants will be committed to integrated education.

Job Purpose: Science Technician
Main duties and responsibilities
1. Health and Safety




To ensure that the laboratories, preparation rooms, stores etc are safe for any person
entering, and that all laboratory services* are maintained in proper and safe working
order.
To check used apparatus to ensure suitability for future use.
To maintain and store appropriately, safely and systematically all apparatus.
To help evacuate any disabled persons on the School’s premises during emergency
evacuation procedures.


Check and maintain first aid equipment.
To be reasonably aware of health and safety procedures, and regulations.
NB * Services are taken to mean gas, water, electricity, heating and lighting. ‘Safe’ is
taken to mean no unsafe furniture, floors, no projecting nails/screws, no spillages, no
dangerous chemicals, apparatus or equipment.
2. Equipment (practice and demonstration materials etc)








To undertake all work associated with organisation, preparation and running
of practical examinations for both internal and external examinations.
Assisting the teacher with classes when they are engaged in practical
activities.
To ensure that equipment/cupboards are in a clean condition.
To prepare, supply, deliver and remove apparatus as requested by members
of the teaching staff.
To lift, carry and store equipment, apparatus and books as required.
To help construct exhibitions, as instructed, in rooms and corridors and
maintain then in good condition.
Repairing or arranging for the repair of equipment.
Check equipment regularly, to ensure that all equipment is in full working
order.
3. Administrative and General Work







To assist with the ordering of apparatus.
To unpack, check condition and record receipt of goods to the area of responsibility.
To check validity and accuracy of invoices and to present invoices to the office.
To organise and maintain a system for the request of apparatus for practice
materials from teachers.
To maintain an inventory of all apparatus.
Other duties as directed by the Head of Department.
Assisting the teaching staff with respect to contracting suppliers etc.
Job Purpose: Assistant ICT Technician
To assist the Senior ICT Technician in the development of ICT within the School to ensure
that all computer systems and peripheral devices are maintained in good working order to
meet the needs of the school.
Main duties and responsibilities
1.
Provision and maintenance of ICT facilities and resources
1.1
Ensure that the school owned microcomputer systems and peripheral devices are
maintained in good working order.
Co-ordinate repair of all ICT related equipment.
1.2
1.3
Liaise with authorised repair agencies as necessary.
1.4
Assist in the installation of ICT related hardware and ensuring its successful
operation.
1.5
Perform routine software operations as required.
1.6
Make back-up copies of software for security purposes as required.
1.7
Assist with the installation of software on any school managed network.
1.8
Assist with the installation of software on stand-alone systems.
1.9
Make minor alterations, where appropriate and copyright permitting, to software as
directed.
1.10 Liaise with the managed service provider as required to support the maintenance of
the Classroom xxxx system.
2.
ADMINISTRATION
2.1
Operate manual and/or computerised information systems in relation to
administrative tasks associated with the area of work.
Maintain an inventory/records of departmental resources.
Assist in the ordering/purchasing, receiving, checking, storing and distribution of
resources.

Appointments are subject to:

Hours of Work
The normal working week is Monday to Friday 9:00 am – 4:45 pm with 45 minutes lunch
ie 35 hours per week.
Annual Leave Entitlement
Entitlement to leave is 25 days in a full holiday year plus all Bank and Public Holidays.
Entitlement to leave in the first year of employment is pro-rata to the number of months
worked.
