Bulletin
Dangerous Goods vehicle licence
This bulletin provides information on the vehicle licencing requirements for people transporting
dangerous goods on Northern Territory roads.
If your vehicle is not licensed in another State or Territory and you intend to transport dangerous goods of
Class 2 -9 (excluding class 1 and 7) in the Northern Territory you must apply for a dangerous goods vehicle
licence.
Dangerous Goods vehicle licence
A vehicle, for the purpose of a licence, does not include prime movers or converter dolly’s, therefore they are
not required to be licensed to transport dangerous goods; however these vehicles must be maintained in a
roadworthy condition at all times.
A dangerous goods vehicle licence is required if you are operating a vehicle that is transporting dangerous
goods in a single receptacle with a capacity of more than 500 L or more than 500 kg. The licence is issued for
three years, but is suspended if the vehicle registration lapses or is cancelled.
You do not need a dangerous goods vehicle licence when:

you are transporting dangerous goods in an intermediate bulk container (IBC), and

the IBC is not packed or unpacked while on the vehicle, and

the total capacity of the IBCs are not more than 3000 L
Provided they are not filled or emptied whilst on a vehicle.
Licence applications – New and Renewals
To apply for a dangerous goods vehicle licence you need to provide the following information:

manufacturer details, including make and model

registration number

tank design approval number

class of dangerous goods to be transported
A business is also required to hold an insurance policy for the vehicle to cover clean-up and emergency
services costs incurred in response to, and recovery of, any vehicle(s) and/or goods involved in a dangerous
goods incident.
