This requisition offers a highly skilled and motivated Systems Safety Engineer an
exciting opportunity to join the world’s largest defence company. Working for the Mission
Support business area this role will potentially support AWE as well as other
programmes. Lockheed Martin is an acknowledged leader in technology and its
application in solving complex, real world problems.
Known particularly for our design, development, fielding and support of military systems
and weaponry, we are also the largest supplier of IT systems to the US government. We
employ more software engineers and, on a daily, worldwide basis, our systems move

Since 2005 our headcount has doubled and Lockheed Martin Ampthill has become
known as a leading UK defence engineering company, delivering on a broad range of
contracts for the MoD, prime contractors across the wider UK market and international
defence ministries. Our core business focuses on systems design, platform integration,
manufacture, update and support of armoured fighting vehicles, C4ISTAR platforms,
weaponry technology and systems research in areas such as ballistic missile defence
and composite fabrication.
Specific Job Description:
 Evolve / review safety designs for products, associated support equipment and
facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establishment of safety
requirements for assigned systems
 Experience of Ordnance
 Focus on directing members of the team to meet critical schedules, resolution of
complex technical and operational performance problems.
 Participation within projects in establishing the content and degree of support
required for each Project.
 Development of acceptable risk criteria from first principles
 development of Independent analysis and mitigation identification to control or
eliminate hazards






development of definition and deliver hazard identification and hazard analysis
requirements using appropriate hazard analysis types and techniques
development and delivery of appropriate ALARP strategies
development and delivery of safety management of potentially hazardous trials
development and delivery of safety documents as required to support customer and
test/operational range requirements
Participate in accident investigations involving damage to products or related
facilities and assists in identification of causes and corrective actions
Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of
concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost effective
program
Required Skills:
Essential Experience
 Qualified to degree or equivalent standard in an engineering subject or equivalent
experience/combined education with professional experience; or professional
experience with a related Masters degree.
 Proven experience in a safety-associated role, preferably in a defence related
industry. That experience to include the determination and allocation of SILs.
 Detailed understanding and experience of UK, US and EEC Safety Legislation.
 Fully familiar with the relevant Joint Service Publications and Defence Standards
associated with safety assessment of defence equipment.
 Experience with IT based toolsets common to the system safety discipline.
 Competent in the use of MS-Office applications.
 The role will require the candidate to have good verbal and written skills.
Desired Skills:
 Implementation of IEC61508.
 Experience in the safety management of OME products.
 Working knowledge and understanding of the UK MoD Design Certification and
clearance process.
 Professionally Registered ideally at Chartered Status with a recognised
Professsional Engineering Institute.
 Considered an authority within system safety.
Standard Job Description:
Reviews product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, functional
specifications and operations, and establishes safety requirements for assigned
systems. Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system design,
equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards. Develops safety documents
as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements. Performs
audits of operational areas and reports effectiveness of system safety program.
Participates in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities
and assists in identification of causes and corrective actions. Evaluates the
interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and
development requirements to ensure the most cost effective program.
Typical Minimum Education & Experience:
Ideally require a Bachelors degree from an accredited college and capability typically
achieved through demonstrable professional experience. Will also consider individuals
