Kitchen

1.

Don't over-fill pots with water when cooking vegetables.

2.

Thaw foods before cooking.

3.

Cook toast in a toaster, not under the grill.

4.

Use an electric frypan instead of using a large oven.

5.

Use a jug/kettle, not the stove, to boil water. Not only will it heat water quickly, it is also 50% more efficient.

6.

Use microwave ovens they can use up to 70% less electricity than convectional ovens .

Laundry

1.

Select ‘cold wash’ on your machine and use laundry detergent for cold washing and you will get good results.

2.

Load your washer fully each wash. If you do not have a full load, adjust the water level of your machine to save on water and power.

3.

Use the sun to dry clothes when you can. An outdoor clothes line or an airer near a sunny

window will do the job and also leave your clothes smelling fresh.

4.

If you do use a clothes dryer make sure you have spun the clothes well before you put them in.

5.

Drying consecutive loads will also be more efficient as the residual heat will help dry the next load.

Bedroom

1.

Instead of running a heater overnight, try an underblanket or extra bedding layer on top.

2.

Use LEDs or compact fluorescent lamps whenever possible for bedside lamps in place of room lights.

3.

On cold days close your curtains well before bedtime, open them on warm days to let in the sun.

Bathroom

1.

Choose to shower rather than fill the bath.

2.

Fit flow restricting water saving shower heads, it will make a big difference to the amount

of water, and therefore the amount of power, you use.

3.

Wash your hands with cold water rather than hot, each time you use a small amount of

hot water a litre goes cold in the pipes.

4.

Turn of the tap when brushing your teeth, it will save money and cleaning.

Living Area

1.

Use the correct size and type of heater for the room. Overheating wastes energy, while undersized heating equipment will struggle even if running on maximum setting and may cost you more money than a larger heater.

2.

Consider the energy consumption of a new TV prior to purchase – a small LCD TV will use only 60 watts whereas a large plasma can use around 450 watts.

Remember the larger the screen the more watts it will use.

3.

Turn off your sound system and TV at the wall when not in use.

Appliances left on standby still use energy.

4.

Turn off lights and heating when the room is not in use
