Office: 16B, Main Building
Office hours: 10:30--11:25 M--F
Class Times: 11:30am—12:20pm M--F, room 108
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Study and Appreciation of the various periods in the history of art and the
materials and methods used by artists.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:
“Wreck This Journal” by Keri Smith
Please bring your journal to class everyday!
“Exploring Art, A Global Thematic Approach, 4th Edition” by Lazzari and
Schlesier [There is a copy on reserve in the Library]
This is a pretty big book! How can we possibly cover it all? We can’t. Between
the power point presentations in class and short homework assignments, you will
be exposed to highlights of the text. You will be encouraged to research on your
own any art we don’t have time to cover in class.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this course students will be able to:
*Demonstrate knowledge of the language used for discussing and evaluating art.
*Demonstrate knowledge of artist’s materials.
*Demonstrate knowledge of the purposes and functions of art.
*Demonstrate knowledge of the themes that artists use and the roles they play in
society.
TYPES OF INSTRUCTION:
Content is presented through power point presentations, textbook readings,
hands on projects in “Wreck This Journal”, viewing of DVD’s and YOUTUBE
videos, and Gallery Visits. Students will need to be able to transport themselves
to Sheehan Gallery at Whitman College and The Walla Walla Foundry or carpool
with other students. Be prepared to enjoy art in a variety of ways!
EVALUATION DEVICES:
Attendance and Engagement, Wreck this Journal and hands on projects, 5
quizzes and 6 written homework assignments. Assignments must be handed in
as a hard copy, I will not accept homework by email or CANVAS.
CONTENT DISCLAIMER:
Art is not always “pretty”. Art can depict all facets of living, so at times we will be
viewing images that relate to war, death, sexuality and other serious themes.
Content is not presented in order to shock or offend anyone, but in order to
expand your awareness of the world of art. This is a college level class and you
can expect mature discussion of a wide variety of subjects.
CLASSROM POLICIES:
ATTENDANCE :
We meet as a class Monday through Friday starting promptly at 11:30 and
ending at 12:20. I expect that you will be ready to go when class begins and will
be in class the entire time. Attendance will be taken for each class. If you are
running late, enter the classroom in the least disruptive manner possible. You
may earn a maximum of 2 points per class for attending and showing active
engagement and participation. Not engaging in the class, sleeping, doing
homework, texting, chatting with friends, being disruptive, and the like may
cause you to forfeit your attendance and engagement points. You may earn
up to 100 points in attendance and engagement points.
I do not excuse absences of any kind; nothing can take the place of being in
class. Whether you are absent for an athletic event, or are sick, you will not
receive points. Should an extremely serious illness cause you to miss several
classes, you may meet with me to discuss your options. I have several extra
credit events listed, I would advise you to attend at least one of those events and
write about your experience. At the end of the quarter I will place a value on your
extra credit when determining your grade.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: I expect that all student behavior will be consistent
with the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the WWCC Student
Handbook. Simply stated, this means that students will conduct themselves in
ways that do not interfere with the education process for themselves and others.
Cell Phones, Earphones, Headsets, and Similar Technology:
Turn off the ringer for your cell phone. Remember, texting during class may
cause you to forfeit your attendance and participation points! If you need to take
a call, step outside of the class. Your cell phone must be turned off during exams
and you may not take cell phone calls or text during exams. You may not wear
earphones or headsets during class or during exams.
CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:
The first time a student is found cheating or plagiarizing, she/he will receive no
points for that assignment or exam. The second time a student is found cheating
or plagiarizing, she/he will receive an “F” for the course.
