Do Now:
Word of the day – Write down the definition, the synonyms, and a sample sentence. Create your
own original sentence using the word of the day. Be ready to share out orally
Student objective:
SWBAT identify and understand the difference between the literal and figurative meanings of
words
SWBAT identify the figurative meaning of words and phrases covered in Walk Two Moons.
How will student learning and progress be assessed during the lesson?
Students will view a PowerPoint presentation lesson on the literal and figurative meanings of
words. Students will complete an interactive exercise where the must assess and determine if
certain words are meant in a literal or figurative sense.
How will student learning and progress be assessed after the lesson or at the end of the unit?
After reading Walk Two Moons students will complete an exit slip in which they must identify the
literal and figurative meaning of words in different contexts.
