Spelling & Grammar






If you’re LDS – the correct spelling of the church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(capital “t” of “the,” and lower-case “d” of “-day”)
o Be sure to double-check the name and spelling of the temple in which you’re being married on
lds.org. (ex. Timpanogos is correct – not Timpanogas. And the true name of the temple is the
“Mount Timpanogos” temple.)
Do not use abbreviations: spell out words like “road” or “avenue” and state names
o You may use punctuation/abbreviations for courtesy titles such as Mrs. or Dr.
o Use roman numerals in names (ex. “Damien Kist IV” instead of Damien Kist the fourth or
Damien Kist 4th)
Days and dates should always be spelled out: “Monday” or “April” versus “Mon.” or “Apr.”
Times and years should be spelled out
o Traditionally, the “afternoon” is approximately noon until 5 pm. After 5 you may use the word
“evening”
o The “o” in “o’clock” is never capitalized
o “a.m.” and “p.m.” are never capitalized
o Be sure to write out the time as though you were describing the placement of hands on a clock
 Half after one in the afternoon
 Six o’ clock in the evening
 Half past ten in the morning
o You may use the British or American spelling for the year: two thousand ten or two thousand
and ten
Punctuation is not used at the end of lines – no commas, periods, colons, etc.
o However, capital letters are treated as though they were the beginning of defined, punctuated
sentences, so you should not capitalize the first letter of each line
Often, the British equivalents of spelling are used in formal invitations (i.e. “request the honour of your
presence”)
