Unit: 2
Lesson 1: mixtures
Pure substance:
It is the substance that is made of only one type of identical
particles.
(Distilled water - Sugar - Baking soda)
Give reason :
Both sugar and distilled water are considered pure
substances.
Because each of them is composed of only one type of identical
particles.
Mixture:
It is the substance that consists of more than one type of
particles.
(Concrete - Milk - Tomato sauce)
Give reason:
Both milk and concrete are considered mixtures.
Because each of them is consists of more than one type of
particles.

Each of solid-solid, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid mixtures is
divided into two types:
Homogeneous mixture:
A type of mixtures in which, we cannot distinguish between its
components.
( Milk - Mixture of salt and water )
Heterogeneous mixture:
A type of mixtures in which, we can distinguish between its
Components.
(Mixture of sand and iron fillings)
The properties of mixture
•The components of the mixture do not join (react) together and
can be separated easily.
• Each component in the mixture keeps its own properties, so
the properties of the mixture are the same properties of its
components.
• The components of the mixture can be mixed at any ratio.
Give reason :
A mixture of sand and iron filings can be separated easily.
Because the components of the mixture do not react together.
Formation of mixtures
Mixture can be formed by different methods such as,
Shaking , Stirring , Grinding
• Solid and liquid materials can be mixed by shaking and stirring
• Solid materials can be mixed by shaking and grinding.
• Liquid materials can be mixed by shaking and
stirring.

1-magnetic attraction to separate a solid mixture.
2- filtration process to separate solid materials that
are insoluble in water.
3- evaporation process to separate solid materials that
are soluble in water such as salt.
4- Separating funnel to separate heterogeneous liquid
mixtures such as water and oil mixture.
Give reason:
Filtration process is used to separate sand from sugary
solution.
Because filtration process is used to separate the solid materials
(as sand) that are insoluble in water.
Lesson 2: Solutions
 The solution is a homogeneous liquid mixture that is made by the combination
of two or more different substances.
 Solute: it is the substance which dissolves in a solvent.
 Solvent: it is the substance in which solute disperses or dissolved.
 Water is called a common solvent.

 Solution: it is a homogeneous mixture in which the solute breaks down into is
most baric particles that spread through the solvent.
 Solubility process: it is process by which a solute dissolves in a solvent
leading to the disappearance of the solute.

 Suspensions: is a heterogeneous mixture in which the particles of the
solute are suspended through the solvent.
ex. Mud in water , orange juice
Factors affecting the solubility of the
components
of the solution

(4)
Quantity of
solvent solute
Temperature
Stirring
Kind of the solute
1- Solubility increases by increasing the amount of the solvent and decreasing by
increasing the amount of solute.
2- Solubility increases by heating ( increasing temperature)
3- Solubility increases by stirring.
4- Some solute dissolve faster than the others like salt dissolves faster than sodium
bicarbonate
