Intensive Course “Suffering, Death and Palliative Care” (Nijmegen, the Netherlands, 14-17 February 2012) The department IQ healthcare, section of Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine (Radboud University Medical Centre) organizes the 14th edition of the advanced European Bioethics Course ‘Suffering, death and palliative care’ from 14-17 February 2012. Aim of the course is to educate participants on a range of ethical issues related to suffering, palliative care and medically assisted death. Extensive insight into the medical, philosophical, theological and ethical foundations of these concepts will be proffered. The course consists of a series of lectures by experts, discussions, and parallel sessions centered around various topics in the domain of palliative care: autonomy and dependence; scientific research in palliative care; palliative sedation and euthanasia; death, suffering and palliative care; quality of life and a good death; spirituality and palliative care. There will be time for intensive discussions. The key-note lecture: Authority in Death and Dying, will be held by Tony Walters, PhD, Professor of Death Studies and course director MSc Death & Society, Department of Social and Policy Sciences, University of Bath, UK. Members of the staff are, among others, Kris Vissers, professor of palliative care in Nijmegen; Dick Willems, professor of medical ethics in Amsterdam; Evert van Leeuwen, professor of medical ethics in Nijmegen; Gerrit Kimsma, general practitioner and philosopher in Amsterdam and Carlo Leget, associate professor ethics of care in Tilburg. The course is of interest to health care providers (e.g. physicians, nurses, health lawyers, hospital administrators, bioethics committee members, health policy makers), professionals in the areas of ethics, philosophy, theology and pastoral care and PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas. The intensive course Suffering, Death and Palliative care is part of the post-initial Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics program organized by a consortium of three European universities: the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and the Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy).
