With the theme of "Green Business," this year's Campus Symposium focused on how Germany, Europe and the
rest of the world are finding ways to combine economy and ecology due to environmental changes and economic
realities. "Ecology and economy have been mutually exclusive but they can reasonably complement each other.
The connection of these two fields of action, called Green Business, will become the great opportunity and the
great challenge for the 21st century," said Matthias Thelen, a BiTS alumnus who led the organization of this year's
Campus Symposium.

CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE
The William J. Clinton Foundation is a foundation established by former President of the United States Bill Clinton with
the stated mission to "strengthen the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global
interdependence." The Foundation focuses on four critical areas: health security; economic empowerment; leadership
development and citizen service; and racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation. The Foundation works principally through
partnerships with like-minded individuals, organizations, corporations, and governments, often serving as an incubator for
new policies and programs. They have offices located in New York City, Boston and Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was founded in 2005 by President Bill Clinton. CGI is a non-partisan organization that
convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. Each year,
CGI hosts an Annual Meeting in September, scheduled to coincide with the U.N. General Assembly. Throughout the year,
CGI helps its members – primarily corporations, NGOs, and government leaders – maximize their efforts to create positive
change. CGI is not a grant-making organization.
CGI also includes CGI University, an annual conference for college students; CGI Lead, a program for rising leaders from the
public, private, and civil sectors; MyCommitment.org, an online portal where anyone can make a Commitment to Action;
and CGI International.
Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting is attended by heads of state, business leaders, non-profit directors, prominent members of the
media, Nobel Prize winners, and other notable global leaders. Attendees have included President Barack Obama, Her
Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Lance Armstrong,
Lloyd Blankfein, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, former Vice President Al Gore, Paul Farmer, Wangari Maathai, Rupert Murdoch,
Rex Tillerson, and Muhammad Yunus. The 2009 Annual Meeting featured an opening address by President Obama and a
closing address by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The 2010 Annual Meeting will take place September 21-23 in New
York City.
At the Annual Meeting, CGI members discuss major global issues, share ideas and knowledge about effective solutions,
and form partnerships that enable them to enhance their work. The program for the 2010 Annual Meeting will be
structured around four Action Areas:




Empowering Girls and Women – CGI members will discuss how they can create progress for everyone by helping
women and girls achieve equal access to education, health care, and economic opportunities.
Strengthening Market-Based Solutions – At the Annual Meeting, CGI members will discuss the best strategies for
bringing market-based solutions to scale, so the benefits can be felt by more of the four billion people who subsist
on less than $3 a day.
Enhancing Access to Modern Technology – CGI members are working to identify the best technologies in
education, health care, and economic development and deploy them on a large scale, so they can reach the
people who need them most.
Harnessing Human Potential – Members are identifying job creation opportunities in different industries, sectors,
and regions, and developing strategies for connecting those opportunities with the people who need them most.
Commitments to Action
Each CGI member develops a Commitment to Action – a plan to take specific action to make the world a better place.
Commitments generally fit within one of CGI’s four Global Challenge areas: Economic Empowerment, Education,
Environment & Energy, and Global Health.
Commitments must be new, specific, and measurable, but beyond those three criteria, members have wide latitude to
determine which actions to take. CGI then monitors the progress and success of these commitments throughout the year.
Funding pledged through commitments does not come through CGI, and is not donated to CGI. Rather, organizations
commit to raise and distribute money on their own.
Laureate Education Inc. | Orange Passion, a Division of Lifebushido | Page 18 of 21
Over the past five years, CGI members have made more than 1,700 commitments, valued at $57 billion, which have
improved the lives of 220 million people around the world.
Action Networks
Action Networks are small groups of members that meet throughout the year to coordinate action on a specific issue. CGI
currently has 18 Action Networks focused on topics including Haiti, Investing for Social and Environmental Impact,
Rethinking Waste, Green Mobility, Higher Education, Low Cost Technologies for Education, Strengthening Health Systems,
Girls’ and Women’s Health, Violence Against Girls and Women, and Combating Cancer in the Developing World.
Action Networks allow members to trade ideas, share best practice information, and explore potential partnerships.
Ultimately, many members will use Action Networks to enhance their existing Commitments to Action or form new ones.
Action Networks that demonstrate the most likelihood of action will have a place on the agenda at the 2010 Annual
Meeting.
MyCommitment.org
Recognizing the power of private citizens to make a positive impact on the lives of others, President Clinton launched
MyCommitment.org, an online portal that gives citizens around the world the opportunity to make a Commitment to
Action.
CGI University
In 2007, President Clinton launched CGI U, which expanded the successful model of CGI to students, universities, and
national youth organizations. CGI U includes two days of plenary sessions and hands-on breakout sessions, followed by a
day-long service project.
At its inaugural meeting, CGI University was held in March 2008 at Tulane University in New Orleans. More than 600
attendees came together to inspire action on college campuses. In 2009, the meeting was held at the University of Texas
at Austin, and in 2010 the CGI U meeting was held in April at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. Since the first
meeting in 2008, CGI U members have made more than 2,000 Commitments to Action in the areas of energy and climate
change, global health, human rights and peace, and poverty alleviation.
CGI Lead
President Clinton created CGI Lead to convene and educate the next generation of global leaders and prepare them to
take action on the world’s most pressing challenges. Each year President Clinton will invite a select group of young, rising
leaders – including corporate executives, public servants, social entrepreneurs, and NGO managers – to participate in CGI
Lead. Representing a diverse collection of countries and backgrounds, participants will serve two-year terms and will be
full members of CGI.
CGI International
Responding to increasing interest among business and governments around the world, President Clinton launched CGI
International to supplement the Annual Meeting in New York with additional meetings in various regions of the globe.
In December 2008, President Clinton convened the first CGI International meeting in Hong Kong to address local, regional,
and global challenges. The focus of the CGI meeting in Asia was on three main areas: education, energy and climate
change, and public health. The two day meeting attracted over 3,000 accredited delegates, a record number for a
nongovernmental organization gathering in Asia.
Prominent participants included: business leaders such as Ajay Banga, Ronnie Chan, Victor Fung, Christopher Graves and
Stephen S. Roach; government leaders such as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Lee Kuan Yew, Nambaryn Enkhbayar, and Donald
Tsang Yum Kuen; NGO heads such as Elisea Gozun, David Ho, and Xiaoyi Liao; thought leaders such as Maris Martinsons,
Sugata Mitra, and Hong Zhang; and the Secretaries-General of both ASEAN and the United Nations - Surin Pitsuwan and
Ban Ki-moon, respectively.

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON ACCEPTS ROLE AS HONORARY CHANCELLOR OF LAUREATE INTERNATIONAL
UNIVERSITIES
President Clinton will advise Laureate International Universities network on social responsibility, youth leadership and
increasing access to higher education
26/04/2010
Baltimore, MD – April 26, 2010 -- President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President
of the United States, has accepted the role of Honorary Chancellor of Laureate International Universities, the global
network of leading private universities. As Honorary Chancellor, President Clinton will advise this group of universities in
areas such as social responsibility, youth leadership and increasing access to higher education. He will also encourage civic
engagement and youth leadership on important social issues during his appearances at university campuses and in print
and online messages to the nearly 600,000 students in the Laureate network.
“Last year I had the opportunity to visit Laureate’s universities in Spain, Brazil and Peru to speak to students, faculty, and
the communities that they serve,” said President Clinton. “These private universities exemplify the same principles of
innovation and social responsibility in education that we worked to advance during my Presidency and now through my
Foundation, and I am pleased to support their mission to expand access to higher education, particularly in the developing
world.”
“We are incredibly proud to have President Clinton’s support in our efforts to boost education and employability in the
developing world,” said Douglas L. Becker, the founding chairman and CEO of Laureate Education, Inc., which operates the
Laureate International Universities network. “We provide management, technology and capital in order to create and
support leading universities in underserved communities. Through investment and innovation, institutions in our network
have become the largest private universities in such nations as Mexico, Chile, Spain, Honduras and Costa Rica, and we are
also experiencing significant growth in large countries such as China and Brazil, and even in the United States.
“Our objective is to achieve excellence in education on a global scale, and we believe that when we achieve this goal,
communities benefit and nations prosper,” said Becker. “President Clinton’s advice and support as Honorary Chancellor
will be an invaluable boost to our efforts, and we know from his visits to our campuses that our students find him to be an
inspiring figure and a symbol of leadership and community service.”
President Clinton has a long-standing commitment to education, both as governor of Arkansas and during his time in the
White House. In Arkansas, he promoted federal education policies that supported teachers, raised standards and
increased test scores above the national average. While serving as the 42nd President of the United States (1993-2001),
President Clinton’s administration made the biggest investment in education in more than 30 years, helping to expand
access to early education, making higher education more affordable and accessible, and improving the quality of learning
in the United States by increasing the number of high-quality teachers, turning around failing schools and expanding
access to technology.
After leaving office, President Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to strengthen the
capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. Today
the Foundation takes action on worldwide issues that urgently require solutions and measurable results– including climate
change, HIV/AIDS in the developing world, childhood obesity and economic opportunity in the United States, and
economic development in Africa and Latin America. Additionally, President Clinton works to engage college students
through the Clinton Global Initiative University and supports schools in creating healthier environments for students and
staff through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the American
Heart Association.
In 2009, he was invited by the President of Haiti and the United Nations Secretary-General to serve as the U.N. Special
Envoy for Haiti. After the Haiti earthquake in January 2010, at the request of President Obama, President Clinton
established with President George W. Bush the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund to provide high-impact relief and long-term

rebuilding assistance. In March, President Clinton was asked by the government of Haiti to serve as international co-chair
of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, which will oversee reconstruction projects in the country.
INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FOUNDATION
The International Youth Foundation (IYF) invests in the extraordinary potential of young people. Founded in 1990, IYF
builds and maintains a worldwide community of businesses, governments, and civil society organizations committed to
empowering youth to be healthy, productive, and engaged citizens. IYF programs are catalysts of change that help young
people obtain a quality education, gain employability skills, make healthy choices, and improve their communities.
Why Young People
Today, the world's youth cohort—1.1 billion young people ages 15 to 24—is the largest in human history. Each one holds
the potential to lead productive, independent lives and contribute positively to society. Yet the majority lacks the skills and
opportunity to stay in school, find and keep a job, and become engaged in their community. Far too many have lost hope
for a better future. IYF seeks to address young people's most pressing needs by supporting effective programs that ensure
that this next generation of workers, parents, and leaders can achieve their full potential. Our future depends on it.
What IYF Does
IYF concentrates on four core areas of youth development:




Education: Ensuring youth, both in and out of school, have access to quality education and increased opportunity
to learn
Employability: Building employment and entrepreneurial skills for youth so they can secure livelihoods with
dignity and earn an income that meets their needs
Health: Preparing youth to lead healthy lives by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make informed,
healthy choices
Leadership and Engagement: Nurturing young people's natural leadership potential to create positive social
change in communities through youth-led initiatives.
In all programs, IYF incorporates 'skills for life' training—in such areas as critical thinking, conflict resolution, effective
communications and teamwork.
How IYF Implements its Programs
IYF seeks to increase the quality and quantity of investments in proven programs by forging strategic partnerships among
the business, government, and civil society sectors.




Customization: IYF works with corporate and individual donors to co-create programs that target local needs. A
sample of current corporate donors include Alcatel/Lucent, Aramex, Caterpillar, General Electric, Microsoft, Nike,
Nokia, Samsung, Starbucks, Sylvan/Laureate, and Wrigley.
Branding: IYF provides visibility for programs through platforms such as the World Economic Forum, the Financial
Times, the International Chamber of Commerce, the US-Islamic World Forum, and other major venues for
highlighting CSR initiatives.
Leverage: IYF also gains critical support from bi- and multilateral agencies and governments—including the
Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the World Bank—
to leverage corporate funds through strategic partnerships.
Grant-making: Since its founding, IYF has mobilized over USD$250 million in resources to expand the
opportunities and capabilities of the world's youth by helping to fund the efforts of hundreds of organizations
worldwide.
